Summary of the week of January 2, 2026
-
This week there are no new developments beyond the weekly news summary. They have been tinkering with the first phase of the museum's file explorer and it's quite advanced, but not advanced enough to go public. The character sets and the formats of iso, container and compression images from the 90s are a mess from a standardization point of view, but it's been an interesting journey. Let's see if something presentable comes out next week.
And now, the weekly summary:
TV manufacturers abandon 8K
The 8K resolution seems to have to wait longer than expected to become popular. LG, one of the few manufacturers that still had 8K models, has followed in the footsteps of TCL (manufacturer of the panels for Sony) and will stop producing devices with this resolution. The reasons are two: production prices and the lack of content in both video and games.
Nvidia does not meet OpenAI's 100 billion
A few months ago, Nvidia announced a billion-dollar investment in OpenAI. The CEO of the GPU manufacturer now says that the agreement was not actually binding and that he will not fulfill it.
Graphical interface for dd
dd is one of the most used (and also most dangerous) tools in Linux. Someone has created a graphical interface based on this program to write.img and.iso images to USB storage drives.
OpenAI doesn't like Nvidia's AI chips anymore
OpenAI has already said that it doesn't like Nvidia's AI chips anymore. The company behind ChatGPT says it is looking for alternatives in AMD, Cerebras and Groq. About these two start-ups, Nvidia has set its sights on a possible acquisition. Cerebras has said no but Groq seems more receptive.
Intel cuts functionality in Linux
Intel has decided to disable video encoding via Vulkan in its Linux drivers now because the functionality has not been tested enough.
