As I just set up the download server with Linux and have been investigating to see which distribution is light enough to be efficient, robust enough to work with the equipment I had, and simple enough for my wife to handle (without suffering too much from removing XP), it occurred to me to ask: which Linux distribution would be your favorite?

There are hundreds of pages that ask this question (well, they ask which one is the best but it seems to me that it doesn't make much sense), but I would like to survey the hardlimit sentiment about it...

For now I have Mint installed, because I like Ubuntu as a base but it has given me many problems when trying to update packages. Mint worked for me on the first try and I find it very intuitive and attractive in its interface so as not to be scary for the usual Windows users. All the configuration is very simple (new repositories, access to NTFS, SAMBA configuration, bookmarks, etc.).

Of the few I have tried, for me Ubuntu 10.10 has always been the most stable, efficient, reliable and simple. Very intuitive and complete.

Another distribution I have tried quite a bit is Fedora and I have also liked it, it has a few more things than Ubuntu and performs quite well, I have not tried in depth the audio and video editing functions it has, but I have good references from colleagues.

Well, I am writing to you from Mint right now and I really like it, it shares the disk of my netbook with Lubuntu, the LXDE version of Ubuntu.
For work, I have had to try 70% of the ones you mention and I stick with those based on Debian and Red Hat for their relative simplicity.
          Best regards.

Something is wrong with the poll… it shows 50% for the 3 distributions voted :nono:

It's that you can select more than one option in the poll, so the percentages distort a bit...

Well, I voted for Mandriva and another because the one I really like is Mageia, a fork of what was mandriva before this summer. I have tried the new Mandriva very superficially, so I can't give much feedback, although it has important differences compared to what it was before.

In general, I like distros based on KDE (I have also tried Opensuse, although not too much and it left me with a good taste in my mouth).

And as for Ubuntu, the main advantage I see is that being the most used is the one with the most documentation available. I have not yet tried Unity, so I will not comment, although I have heard that it still has a lot of way to go to match Gnome in usability.

To set up a download server, I would use any distro with a light desktop and an NX server for remote desktop connections (nothing like VNC, which consumes a lot of bandwidth, something important for connections from outside the local network). When you turn on the PC, you wouldn't start the X server, so you would save a very significant amount of resources. And of course I would try to use P2P clients and others that have the possibility to run as daemons and that were accessible by GUI from another PC without needing to use an NX client, loading the X server to the PC. For example: amuled on the server and amuleGUI on the client, but there are many others. This way, the client from where you manage the download server pulls all the graphical interface and while the download server remains light without having to load any graphical server.

I am a stubborn dog and still use Windows XP on the download server, but if one day I feel like it, I would do it this way.

I used to use KDE with Open SUSE, and Unity with Ubuntu, but now that I tried Gnome 3 (which I installed on Ubuntu) I wouldn't change it for anything, it's tremendously simple, minimalist and modern and also very customizable with a couple of add-ons. One more reason for me to switch to Fedora is that it already comes with it by default.

PD. Zenpipers is still alive! Greetings, fellow countryman :risitas:

I don't use Linux… but I have voted for Knoppix, after the live of this distribution helped me recover data from a hard drive that disappeared from Windows, it deserved recognition ?.
