AMD initially told us that we would have to gather our Radeon HD 7970 review by January 9th. For a new GPU architecture, approximately three weeks with the card would be sufficient to thoroughly investigate its operation and deliver a full review. Sometimes things are too good to be true. The 9th turned into the 22nd and three weeks became 6 days of testing.
I have to say that Ryan has done admirably. Not only did he get all the tests done for our 7970 rev. but he also ran all the competing cards on our new PCIE 3.0 equipped GPU test bench. The test bench features an Intel Core i7 3960X controlling at 4.3GHz, an EVGA X79 SLI lMobo, and 16GB of G.Skill DDR3-1866 memory.
The 7970s are AMD's first GCN (Graphics Core Next) based GPU. This has been TSMC's 28nm and will be available around January 9th. TSMC's 28nm productions are finally acceptable for mass production, so we should see a steady stream of cards once the ramp up starts next year.
How did the 7970s perform? It is without a doubt the fastest GPU in the world. The lead over the GeForce GTX 580 varies, but you look at the 20% shave off the average. This is more of an evolutionary improvement rather than the type of upheaval we often look for with these new architectures.

I was looking at results on Hard[OCP] and it doesn't seem to be a big improvement, especially compared to the GTX580. It only stands out a bit more in very extreme configurations like eyefinity at ultra quality, etc.

I had thought about getting rid of the 6950 now that I can still get a good amount…of course I think that later I will put another one like mine and keep going

I'm pretty happy with my 570 but I'd like a little boost for my BF3, but I'm trying to curb my live consumer anxiety and wait for Nvidia's "new" thing, I don't know why but these AMD ranges don't call to me as much as the 5000 series when it came out, let's see how this is all shaping up.

Well, I have a GTX570 next to me (one of a client's, a Club3D) and what a big card it is. Let's see if I can bench it this afternoon, I'm eager to see how it performs :chuckles: I took a picture next to my tower and it looks huge, I mean the 580 must be not a brick, but the next thing xDDD
Also, my colleague just got himself a new computer with a 2500k and a GTX570. It's an MSI twin frozr iii which is a marvel, and on top of that it's shorter than this other GTX570 C3D reference model. That said there's a 50 euro difference, but I think it's worth it.

My old 5870 seemed bigger to me, 34cm wing XD you'll be around that size, recently I mounted a gtx580 EVGA DS superclocked and it was big for a while, but I don't know, I'm also ready to upgrade to 2011 and it's a fortune but well my 920 3 years is lasting and can last longer but I want to change it, let's see why I decide before.

Come on! The truth is that I found myself in this situation by chance, and for being a klutz… besides, selling the 6950 was just a remote thought.

Anyway, the day you change your monitor, and you have more resolution, that's when you'll see that you're short on the graphics. So, better enjoy what you have because it gets worse later

If you give away the GTX470 I'll keep you in mind for the candidate list :risitas:
