      Hello everyone!
The problem is that the computer behaves as if it does not have a graphics card driver, but it does and it is the one that comes with it, in fact I have tried with two different graphics cards, one from ATI and another from NVIDIA (each with their respective drivers), and it gives the same problem: when you open a window and try to drag it across the desktop, it leaves that characteristic ghost trail, the windows do not open or close in one screen but do so progressively from top to bottom and also behind the text of the icons, you can not see the desktop background photo, but a rectangle with the base color, but in the visual effects tab it is configured so that Windows runs it as best as possible. It has been tested with all the values of that option and it continues the same.
I have just run antivirus, antispyware, defragmented, etc…

      Any ideas?

What graphics cards are you using and what drivers have you tried and on what operating system? Have you tried with another monitor? (although that would be very strange). Do the DirectDraw/Direct3D tests in DXDiag work well for you?

I think that's not from the graphics… Look at the task manager, check the processes, that there isn't any one sucking up 98% of the CPU or anything like that, it's usually the most characteristic thing that causes those traces and that slowness in the windows. It can be some program or system process that doesn't work correctly and starts to saturate the CPU for no apparent reason, which sometimes happens.

It happened to me with Windows Media player, I always used it as a rule until after a format it suddenly began to consume 100% of the CPU and the memory in use increased by seconds to real barbarisms... and recently with a suspicious svchost as well, but I managed to eliminate it after many turns.

GRAPHICS: nvidia 8500gs PCI EX and ATI HD5450 with the latest drivers downloaded from their websites
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows XP 32 bits
MONITOR: discarded, tested on two different ones
DIRECTX and DIRECTDRAW: they work correctly and pass the tests.

            any other ideas? :nono:

Formatting? Have you tried another hard drive or another operating system?
That's probably the key, because it's almost certainly not a hardware failure...

There's always time for formatting
I don't blame it on hardware either, that seems clear.
I thought I'd try reinstalling because the computer isn't mine and if I can avoid formatting it, then much better. Although I don't know why I have a feeling that I won't solve it.
                I'll comment later...

                  Good luck, let us know.

                    ok, it's already solved.
The shadows under the icons and the windows were different problems.
I solved the windows problem by reinstalling windows XP from the cd.

I solved the icons problem by going into "screen properties", "desktop" tab, "customize desktop", "web" tab and deselecting the option to show web pages on the desktop. That was the reason why the name of the icons came out in a box with the color of the desktop background.

Thanks for the help and that's the experience

It was clear that it was something to do with the software or the operating system.
                      I'm glad you fixed it.

                      Best regards
