A ver, yo ya me esperaba que no funcionara OPTIMUS, pero de aqui, a que ni pueda usar solamente la GPU de nvidia, y que ni almenos pueda desactivarla para que no se coma la bateria y usar solo la Intel….pff, menudos chapuzas los de nvidia, lo llevan claro con los users de linux segun he leido un poco, algun que otro ha sacado un patch, pero nada, nada que funcione bien y sin liarse a comandos para cada aplicacion...
Es el clásico caso en el que de aquí a unos meses aparece una solución definitiva al problema incluida en las principales distros. El inconveniente es que hay que esperar y tampoco es completamente seguro que se solucione.

En cierto modo eso ya me lo espero, lo que me JOD* es la palabra de nvidia de "No esta soportado y no haremos nada al respeto", que algun maquina lo solucionara, me lo imagino, pero que nvidia no quiera saber nada…deja mucho que desear por su parte!

No te digo que Nvidia no tenga su culpa, pero quizás el problema lo tenga Intel, ¿no? al fin y al cabo la plataforma (Proce + Placa) es Intel y debería gestionar esto de forma correcta, y deshabilitar la Nvidia (vamos desconectarla por decir algo) si detecta que no se usa (o no se puede usar).
Desde luego, no digo yo que en sus drivers Nvidia no pusiera una solución para apagarla si no se activa, pero cuando la culpa la tiene ambos (Intel-Nvidia), siempre lo acaba pagando el usuario.
No esta de mas que investigues en foros extranjeros, porque no creo que seas el único que se queje de ese problema, incluso en foros de Intel y Nvidia. Me cuesta crees que no haya una pequeña solución, aunque sea mínima.

Estoy de acuerdo en que Intel debería gestionar la funcionalidad de este soporte, pero lo que se vé venir es que la mezcla de tecnologías no iva a ser soportada por Linux.
Que nVidia haga oídos sordos al asunto deja que desear por su parte, pero lo que es seguro es que el billetaje se lo llevan al tener firmado el compromiso de fabricación con Intel. El resto depende de Intel y de las ventas que ellos consigan, porque nVidia habrá cobrado previamente por la mera fabricación. Así es lógico que se desentiendan…Salu2!

Since then, at least one new version of Ubuntu must have come out. I suggest you try it, and not just that one, but more recent distros. You can even try the Cauldron version of Mageia, which updates to the latest versions of all programs constantly and, although it's not suitable for daily use, with it you can check if they have already solved the problem to be aware of future releases of stable versions.

But don't worry, you're not the only ones with nvidia problems on linux... I've been trying for over a year to get the GTX295 to work with two monitors on linux (one has a DVI-VGA adapter) and I've never been able to get the second one to take the resolution it should... not even by forcing it or editing the resolution file or anything... but well, that's life. It seems unbelievable that it's easier for me to do it on hackintosh than on linux :S

KDE comes with a utility called KRandRTray that is a simple but effective screen manager. You can try it on a distro with KDE like Kubuntu, Opensuse or Mageia.

Anyway, the last attempt was a few months ago and I tried Ubuntu, fedodra (with KDE), Opensuse and Mint and none of them solved it. I think it's because of the DVI-VGA adapter but of course my graphics card only has DVI and HDMI outputs... -
Reading about Optimus I see that they do say that Optimus requires Win.
