      Hello guys, I'm new here.
The other day, I finally managed to overclock my Acer aspire 1640z with setfsb.
It holds up to 2326 Mhz and has a Pentium M (1700 Mhz factory)
The thing is, I don't think I'll use it at more than 2000 Mhz, and the temperature doesn't exceed 70°C (and a maximum of 105° is allowed for this processor) since the fan turns on at 50 degrees. My question is, is there any inconvenience in overclocking it to this frequency if the laptop seems stable and the temperature always stays between 50-65°C?

      Thanks ?

You are going to fry it sooner or later, but since that laptop is at least 8 years old, well, what the hell. That said, get ready to hear the fan all the time, and to clean it very well of dust every so often and change the thermal paste. Although they say 105º, before that the processor will lower its frequency to protect itself.

You will also notice greater performance if you format and keep the windows as clean as possible, if you expand the RAM, or change the hard drive. I am not talking about an SSD, but a modern hard drive could improve performance.

As they tell you, overclocking a laptop is not very advisable, and even less now that we are in summer. All in all, for office work, the computer should work well, and if it can't play an MKV movie, it won't be able to with or without overclocking. The micro performs what it can, don't ask for much more. I would only overclock it a little, one thing is the limit of the micro and another is that it is advisable to always have it very hot.

Thanks for replying so quickly ?

No, it's to squeeze it out in the last few months. It's just that I like to play and this laptop runs some games that aren't bad, but with a little lag, and with OC it's pretty much gone. Do you think it will last at least 5 months? It's because soon they will buy me a good desktop computer, but it may be that I have it in a month or in 6 or 7 months.

Another question, I try to overclock to more than 2326 Mhz it freezes and some lines appear on the screen that overlap with the Windows interface, I suppose that's the limit, but I'm curious. Why does it happen? Why can't it be continued until it really gets very hot? Is it a voltage problem?

            Thanks :risitas:

Those lines are because the fsb is associated with the integrated graphics, and it surely also increases the frequency of the memories, and that's when it freezes. In addition, you should do the tests for 3-4 hours. They should be for 24 hours to test that the stability is bulletproof, but on a laptop not in a joke. That is, if you refrigerate it like crazy, with one of those bases so that it always receives air.
And no, it doesn't play mkv. It has an intel graphics with 1gb ddr2 400mhz, and with that you can't do anything. And the HD is IDE. From there at most an IDE ssd, and put 2gb ddr2 in it. I know it works with memory at 667 because I have one like that.

              Regards

+1 to everything mentioned by the colleagues.

Look for a good cooling base, although personally if I were you, I would forget about the conventional ones they sell and I would make my own as beastly as possible, putting in two 12 fans or four or more of 8, because if the ambient temperature rises a little and you accumulate dust in a week, you might fry it prematurely...

                Greetings

if within 5/6 months they buy you a new PC, hold out until then with the laptop as it is, because otherwise you may have to endure NOTHING.
P.D don't forget to give the laptop to Sylver when you have the desktop :ugly:

Haha, thanks to all, I'll keep in mind about refrigerating it well. For now what I've done is disassemble some parts of the laptop (I use it as if it were a tower connected to another external screen) next to my balcony which is getting cool xD

If it fries before I have a pentium 4 but I would have to take it to my house, but I could do it. The thing is that I don't want to get bored when I have nothing to do.

                    Merci to all!

Honestly, as in the previous post it seems that I did not explain myself well, I will do it more extensively this time.
1º I do not see the point of trying to get more performance out of a laptop to play (when in 5/6 months you have a desktop)
2º I only see OC viable in desktop computers or certain laptops, which is not the case for you
3º With the money you can spend on: memory, hard drive, cooling bases and so on... I think you'd better save it (or they save it (that's why in the post (26-Jun-2013 00:52:00) you put that they will buy you) to buy certain better things: micro, heatsink etc.
4º And last, I understand that a laptop is for what it is and investing in upgrading it to play when in 5 months you have a desktop I think is throwing money away
P.D. And about giving it to Sylver is a joke, but it was because he is always tinkering and maybe he is capable of putting fans in it like a drone
                      Regards

Franziskaner leave it, if it's going to die anyway… You don't want to save it xD
It's like the one who participates in a demolition derby, the goal is to finish melting the cars :ugly:

PD: There I saw you quickly recommending the donation of the laptop to my person when it is no longer useful ?
Don't retract, I will reuse it and put a hundred fans on it even if it sounds like an airbase, that's just how I am :fumeta:

Don't worry guys, the laptop is already a mess since I got it and they were going to throw it away, it doesn't even have a screen, I had to put an external one. And I'm not going to invest anything, I'll just put OC on it and if it dies you can bring me another one that I have in another house xD.

Thanks really for your responses ?
