I've been playing this original game that I've had since time immemorial (well, it's actually my brother's), Civilization - Call to power II, for a few days:

but the damn thing has started to crash everywhere once it passes the year 3000 AD, so I've been left wanting to crush the Russians and the Germans :risitas:

I'm looking for a similar game and obviously the most obvious options would be Civilization III, IV and V, but there's probably something else out there. The free software clone FreeCiv I haven't quite looked into, it seems awkward to me to handle.

Other series that I really like are Sim City and Transport Tycoon. The Transport Tycoon does have a really good clone, OpenTTD:

To filter, I'll give you some details:

      • It must work well on Windows 7 or Linux Mint.
      • I prefer an isometric view like the ones in the screenshots rather than thousands of possibilities with a camera and everything in pure 3D.
      • Online play is a no-go for me.
      • If I can get a physical edition, all the better, otherwise I can always resort to Steam.

      Opinions and experiences?

      Thanks!

I've played sim city and I like them, I haven't tried the new one yet but it will be more of the same, the one in tropico 4 is entertaining, I got cities in motion and I'm not really into it, I have civilization 5 and it's entertaining but I haven't played much, it's more of the same, you play one and you play them all. I'm currently playing the RTS company of heroes 2, if you like RTS, the previous COH is a marvel and if you like WWII you'll like it.

I take note of Cities in Motion, Tropico and Anno. I just downloaded the demo of Civilization V, to see if it convinces me with so much flourish.

The fact that they are more of the same does not worry me, in fact it is what I want, one that is more of the same but that does not crash, hehe. I also like that they come with their box, manuals, technology tree, etc... in the old way, and at least all the ones commented on except for Cities in Motion can be found easily.

The Civilization V in the box comes with a mega poster with all the technologies and such, I confirm it because I have it physically, although you can always download it if you buy it digitally, although I still like to have things in the box even if they are not worth it :ugly:

Yesterday I was installing some modifications that the community has made to Call to Power II, to see if it doesn't crash. It's curious, since that community has the source code of the game because Firaxis/Sid Meier gave it to them exclusively so they could keep the game alive.

Anyway, even if it works, it's about time to give something more modern to my i3, which when you install Call to Power II asks you if you have a powerful computer, PII 200 or higher :ugly:

Age of Empire is in real time and the ones I'm looking for are turn-based, but they do mention some that are useful. Thanks for the contribution!

Then that interests me. Does it come in a big box or in the typical CD box?, because I think that's how I've seen it around. And I'm also one of those who keeps the boxes and preferably the physical edition, just in case the end of the world comes and there's no time for Steam to release their games xD.

Well, my box is the typical DVD case with a cardboard cover, and inside there's the DVD and the poster with all the info, you know, you pick it up and it's heavy because it has everything XD, lately they buy physical copies and there's a crappy flyer, they spend less and less and we spend more.

You see, they are getting fewer and fewer.

I have here the Sim Earth in a large cardboard box, two 3.5" double density floppy disks, several registration sheets, and two manuals, one exclusive for the Amiga of 15 pages and another general one of... ¡¡¡ 220 pages!!!, on top with a cardboard cover... those were other times (grandfather cebolleta mode).
