Hello everyone, I hope you can help me.

Well, I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop that I got in a trade. Until two days ago, everything was working fine. The laptop would run around 46 to 50 degrees when idle and 60 to 70 degrees when I was playing games, etc. That was all normal.

So, two days ago, I decided to buy a cooling pad with two fans to help it cool better. Now, I find that it's running worse if I don't use the pad and I have to use a program to control the fan to cool it properly. If I don't do this, now it goes up to 70 degrees on its own when idle, and I don't want to think what happens when I start playing games or something. Before, the fan would kick in before it reached 50 degrees, but now it only activates when it reaches 73 degrees. I did an internal cleaning of the heatsink and changed the thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU, and it's still the same. This only started happening after I put the cooling pad on. In the BIOS, I can't configure the fan at all, and even though I have that fan control program and it works well, I want it to be like it was before, without any external programs or anything, because before it worked fine without anything. What could be going on? What can I do? Could it be the operating system? Regards.

The power/dissipation ratio is the Achilles' heel of the vast majority of laptops. If we add to this the bad habits (which is not the case) copied from the TV, of taking it to bed or putting it on your lap (although that's where the term "laptop" comes from), we make things worse.
I assume that said base is via USB, was some kind of driver installed?
Since you indicate that it didn't happen before, you must make an effort and remember what was installed in addition to the base and the fan application during that period, because that's where the culprit will be.

As an anecdote about cooling pads, I was never convinced by those gadgets: I saw them as more useful to those who sold them than to those who used them. 4 plastic caps from a soft drink, under my laptop to raise it, and a desktop fan blowing from the left, gave me a better deal. ;D

I don't even put the laptop on the bed or my knees, I always work with it on a glass or wooden table.

Regarding the base, if it's USB and when I connected it, I didn't install anything or detect anything, it works just the same. Moreover, when I connect the base, Windows doesn't make the typical sound or anything. As for the little program, I don't know either, I tried it but I'll try it again and report the results.

Because I messed around disassembling it screw by screw and cleaning everything, the fan, the heat sink, and I changed the thermal paste on the CPU. I didn't do anything to the GPU because the heat sink has a kind of sponge on it. I can't find the fault, I'll try with a clean Windows to see what happens and I'll comment on it. Thanks for the help.

well, I removed the hard drive and booted from the Hiren's Boot CD and it's still the same, so it's not Windows or at least that's what I think.

Could it be that the program you installed changed/blocked the smartfan options or the cool'n'quiet or whatever it's called in the BIOS?

the problem is that these beautiful dell ones have a bios for my trash that doesn't let me do anything. There is no option to configure the fan or anything. I think it might be that, but how do I reconfigure it if there is no option in the bios?
