Hello everyone. Let's see if you can all give me some clues about the problem I have. I changed the RAM of an old PC. That PC had 2GB (2 x 1GB DDR2 666MHz PC5300). I installed Windows 7 with disk formatting included. Once Windows was installed, I changed the RAM to 4 modules of 2GB each (4 x 2GB DDR2 800MHz PC6400). The motherboard supports this RAM and the amount: http://www.asus.com/es/Motherboards/P5W_DH_Deluxe/ When I start the PC in POST, it shows that I have 2GB of RAM installed. In the BIOS, it detects the 8GB but says that only 2GB are available. It can't start Windows, or it says that a file is missing or it restarts when loading. If I put only 4GB or 6GB of RAM, Windows starts, but in Computer it says: 6GB of RAM, only 2GB usable. Does anyone know what I can do, what the problem is and if it can be solved? Thanks in advance.

I think I have it now… In the BIOS if I enable "Memory Remap" it recognizes the 8GB and doesn't throw any Windows errors. But I still have the doubt if a failure could ever occur.

The problem is that you installed Windows before changing the modules and you will have the 32-bit version instead of the 64

            Hello Kernel.

The installed version is 64-bit. But anyway, with "Memory Remap" it is solved.

Well, before you couldn't install the 64-bit version with less than 4 gigabytes of RAM... think that both versions are on the disk and it would install the 32-bit version.
If the BIOS doesn't recognize all the memory, Windows won't either, but just because it's fine in the BIOS doesn't guarantee it will be in Windows.

Well, I'm glad the problem has been solved.
Besides, I had always believed that the minimum memory for a 64-bit Windows was 2 GB (1 GB for 32-bit), not 4. I could be wrong though.

In the case of Windows 7 I think it's 4 minimum and of Windows 8 2GB

It's not solved, until it's confirmed otherwise.
I only say that with the disk I have of Windows 7 if you have less than 4 gigas of ram it installs the 32-bit version, I don't know how it goes in Windows 8, or if in more recent installation disks of Windows 7 it will continue to be like this.

Windows 7 works with less than 2 Gb of RAM, 32-bit version of course. That is, the performance is completely affected, since for it to work acceptably and with Aero, it needs to consume a minimum of 2 Gb.

                      Greetings

                        Before the snowball gets bigger:

If the installation disk of W7 64 bits is a disgrace that installs a 32-bit system because it is based on RAM detection and not on processor architecture, well, another one from Microsoft. :wall:

But I repeat that the minimum RAM required to install is 2 GB for 64 bits and 1 GB for 32 bits, whether it is Windows 7 or 8.

And while we're at it, cslbcn, confirm if Windows recognizes all your RAM. ;D

                              Hello.

In the end it was not solved. I managed to install the 8GB by activating the memory remap, but Windows did not work, blue screen. The BIOS did recognize the 8GB. I think the first time it worked because the planets aligned at that moment. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7 64bits with the 8GB of ram installed. The installation started well, but after the first restart during the installation, blue screen. There was no way to continue. I removed a 2GB module and it started to work and for now it continues to work. With 8GB it does not work, with 6GB it does. Very strange.

On another different PC I did the same process with the 4 ram modules installed (8 GB) and everything worked the first time. So I imagine that the PC that does not recognize 8GB of ram will have something wrong with it. Is there a problem with the motherboard?

You'll laugh, but with a slightly thick and soft brush, clean the RAM slots of the board that is failing you. In 99% of cases, this is the solution to all the problems that the memory modules give.

Once you have done that, you have to activate the Memory Remap in BIOS before the installation of Windows 7 of 64 bits, which I don't know if you did on the last occasion. They also say out there that that board lowers the working frequency of the memories from 800 to 667 mhz when 4x2Gb are installed, or that's what I have read out there.

I also assume that the modules will be identical to each other, right?

                                Greetings
