My "new" PC

Well, I'm opening this silly thread to say that a while ago I retired my 775 platform that has been with me since 2006. I must say that it has been by far the PC that has lasted me the longest and the one I've gotten the most out of. The last update I made to it was to a Xeon E5472 which, due to the limitations of the motherboard, ran at 2.5GHz instead of 3. That was an important step from my Core 2 Duo E6600 due to the fact that it doubled the number of cores. Here is the Core 2 Duo:
The Xeon E5472 meant a 60% improvement in single-thread and almost triple in multi-thread, which was noticeable in games. I also have to say that the E6600 was actually overclocked to 3GHz, but I don't know why, I didn't run the benchmark at this frequency:
Anyway, a few months ago they were going to throw away a tower with an i5-3570K and 8Gb of RAM. I took it, tested it and it worked perfectly the first time. So I put in the GTX460 OC and away we went: The double performance in single-thread and more than double in multi-thread. The differences compared to the Xeon have also been noticeable in all aspects and although the graphics card is already quite old (I think it will be a decade next year), the truth is that I can still play some games with decent graphics and playable fluidity. Now that I hear so much about Zen2, I feel like changing but the truth is that after having been scavenging, first from a platform as long-lived as the 775 and then from other people's waste, I feel a bit lazy.

The 775 platform is one of the ones I've enjoyed the most in my life as a tinkerer. I started with an E2180 that came out very cheap (about 45-50 Euros) and overclocked it like an E8400-8500 so I was delighted. When it became insufficient for me I bought a second-hand Q6600 that I had running at 3.2 almost all the time and overclocked. Then I still have a few Dual Core processors around (I donated some, but I still have at least 5 although I should check the drawers). I also still have what I think is a Q8200-8300. I regretted selling the Q6600 with the P45 motherboard but I still have a P35 so maybe one day I'll build a Xeon to tinker with a bit. Then I moved to a second-hand FX-8320 that I burned... and they sent me an FX-8350 that my nephew inherited and it's still working decently, and now I'm still with an I7 2600K. All of this on desktops, because in laptops, HTPC I use I5, Atom etc...
It's incredible that someone would throw away an I5-3570K that to this day is still a usable micro.
I'm also looking at the Ryzen, but I doubt one will fall this year, because for the use I give the computer I have more than enough with what I have, but maybe 2020 is a good time to try a Ryzen 6-12 or 8-16...
Be that as it may, long live the 775 platform Cobito!!!!! I sold my Q6600 because I got the change to the FX and then to the I7 at a low price, but that minimum 50% OC that I got out of the Q6600 still brings me good memories.

No nonsense, this is the true essence of our forum, the tinkering, the history of each one, what we started with, which lasted the longest, what we were given, what we found, rescued... My first dual core was precisely a gift from a friend, the Athlon 64 X2 at 2.9Ghz (Brisbane) that I still have.
(By the way, now that I see my signature, the Newcastle 754 board died a few months ago
)
Certainly, the 775 is one of the most versatile and durable platforms ever made. My father now has precisely a Q6600 that I bought him at H2M to banish a rather lazy Athlon X2 255 with little cache.
As you well know, I am also the owner of a Conroe E6600 like yours Cobito, although it is stock in the HTPC, and at the time I tinkered with the same Xeon X5472, although now I have it stored, because my board also limited for some reason and I could not get any extra performance out of it.
In fact, lately I have been working with quite a few 775 platforms for work, as some of you may have read, and it is making me get the tinkering bug again...
Speaking of which, @amd125, if it's not a bother I would like us to talk about those Dual Core privately, I have three 775 boards orphaned of micro and it is a real shame. Thanks in advance buddy

Sometimes this happens: someone who doesn't know what they have, has a piece of junk they don't need and think doesn't work and that also takes up space.

Long live it! My old tower with the Xeon I think still has battles to fight. For most tasks (even many current games), it still holds up. For now I have it tucked away without a disk or graphics card, but anything to dust off something I have around.
The truth is that this PC has aged really well with very little money. This is how it started.

For me the Conroe was the symbol of the end of Moore's law and how the MHz of the processor finally stopped making sense for comparing performance.
I said before that the motherboard limited but in reality it was the memory. I put 4 Gskill modules at 800MHz with a total of 8Gb and changing such a quantity to get 500MHz more seemed like a pointless endeavor.

Hello:
I've looked at the micros I have and they are E6550. I had an E2180 that overclocked by more than 50% but I donated it at H2M. They were mounted in computers at my job years ago. Right now I have located 2 loose in a drawer, plus another that I think is mounted in a computer that I have in a closet, at work I have another and I should have 1-2 more around that will be a matter of searching. If you want, you write me privately, you tell me which ones you need, you give me your address and on Monday I will send them to you without any problem. If you need a Quad Core and you are going to use it, I could send you the one I have, which I think is a Q8200-8300, not a marvel, but with a little OC and 8 Gigas of RAM for office work it still works.

I have an 775 that I built to make the most of the leftover 1150 ITX platform I had and to have a small computer for Windows XP, as you know I'm attracted to things with a certain heritage and for everyday use I still use the NUC.
The micro is an E5500 and the motherboard is a Zotac GF9300-ITX, currently using the integrated Geforce 9300 and if I get the urge later I'll put in a GTX650 and I'll have a computer that's almost a gamer from that era

By the way, let's see if I can change the result of my signature to be the NUC.
