Xeon e5-2680 v2 versus Xeon e5-2651 v2

Reasons to consider the Intel Xeon E5-2651 v2
2.8 times better performance in Geekbench 4 - Single Core: 2030 vs 713
2.3 times better performance in Geekbench 4 - Multi-Core: 18071 vs 7890
SourceThe other day with the topic of planned obsolescence made me really think about what one wants or can have and want, and, what one really needs. That being said, I was rummaging around on the web, to look for options to upgrade the hp servers of gen 8 and I really have to say that even buying from stores with their pertinent warranty, there were several options. That being said, I have opted for the xeon (2) 2651 v2 whose price is 150 euros for both processors. Although in the test that the people from the source published show us, the 2680 can really move most applications faster. But, here is the issue, the one I'm telling you about is from the end of November 2013 and the one I have from the first quarter, as well as the 2680 are 10 cores 20 threads, compared to the 12 cores 24 threads that x2 gives us 24 cores -48t compared to the 2680 and here that's what I need it for there is a change in performance that is worth making. Since I will put the 2680s in the other one that has the e5-2660 v2 and in this way I save them in case one of them breaks, these last ones. If time allows me I will try to do a review and bench with a comparison. For now, I have already updated the latest version of the chipset, and Bios so that when these two CPUs arrive the server will boot normally. By the way, they are refurbished, because new I think it goes up a lot. A hug, comrades.
PD: We will pass our test bench to expand the database of the forum.

I have an E5-2670V3 (12 cores 24 threads 2.3Ghz with turbo boost of 3.1Ghz) in a gaming pc and the performance is good. Obviously comparing it to last generation processors doesn't make sense, but it still performs very well and I use it as a home pc, with a radeon RX6600XT and in terms of CPU, I am served. I have seen packs on AliExpress with socket 2011-3 motherboard (b85 chipset), 16Gb RAM RegEcc and the processor for about 130/150US$.

@pos_yo I agree that it doesn't make sense to compare it with current CPUs. For example, the core i7 11600H in my laptop performs better with turbo than my dual Xeon e5-2680 v2 server, but since what I use is parallel computing with chess programs, I stick with 40 cores and 80 threads. That's now, we'll see what arrives tomorrow. I'll send you a list of a benchmark so you can see that with an MPI cluster it gets pretty close to single CPU workstations, but they cost a fortune.

sourceNote that I didn't cheat and only used the 40 threads, otherwise the result would be different. Not to mention that I have a U form and not a tower, because something could be scratched by adding good ventilation. That said, as you rightly mention, it can't be compared; in fact, in the benchmark I have a better result with the core i7 (it goes with an RTX 3060) and this doesn't have anything but the integrated one, so those who know me already know that I use it for chess programs. Note that I like overclocking, but at 50 years old, I looked for what suited me best. I've seen the one on AliExpress, but it doesn't inspire confidence in me. I imagine it will work well, but I don't trust it. And I can expand it for little money with 3 nodes, 4 nodes, the problem is the electricity. The bill would be scandalous.

By the way, being a v3, it doesn't fall within gen 8 of hp, right? although the socket is lga 2011, I imagine it won't be ivy bridge.

Hello colleagues, we have already installed them and, in relation to the famous ILO that we discussed the other day, what can I say, connecting via IP and being able to update the firmware, etc. Fabulous. The only thing that doesn't add up to me is the issue of the damn graphics card. I've been tinkering around and I've seen that some daredevil has removed the heatsink from those GT 730 graphics cards, which is what I have and it's bare. Then we can close the case and we're ready. But these servers with that bunch of fans that cool the two sockets and the extractable ones, they don't really accept that you put that PCI adapter on them, because the sound is unbearable. @krampak perhaps if you have worked with servers you have seen, better heard the noise they generate. At least when I worked at La Caixa in the computer center (security, hehe) it was like a refrigerator. Well, to sum up, I have passed the Forum's Benchmark, SSE and AVX and what I feared, I made a mistake with the codename, because there is an E5 from the V2 family (none can be overclocked, although I don't see the reason for a server either) in the others I have they do have a QPI that with the multiplier at 20, I think they reach 3.5, but this one stays at 1.8. In any case, I have mentioned our friend krampak because I imagine you see the photos of the two gadgets on the table. And that can't be. I mean, looking for the cheapest possible cabinet to put them on the guides, close them and that they have ventilation. The laptop? well I will change it for two more and then we will mount four units in a network and see how the thing performs, or if I have to increase the watts of the electricity company. By the way, in the end, I will use the DDR3 ECC modules of 8 for one of the two that are missing and the two Xeon E5 2660 v2 also better overall performance, so we will also take advantage of that. The issue of networks and the bottleneck in a cluster with four nodes, I don't know if there will be saturation or not, I'm not an expert, but I have read that it gives problems (in parallel computing). And if any of you could tell me why an Ivy Bridge doesn't run a program with AVX instructions, when the specifications of the XEONs, on the Intel website says it does, you would be doing me a favor.. Tomorrow they will call me from one of those stores that sell those cabinets (I have already told them to forget about those I saw from NASA) to see a quality-price ratio and that the four chassis and the router fit, closed and see if I don't have to have the air conditioning on. Well, I won't get too tangled up, that in a please they were updated and working well, in fact the temperature logically lower, less QPi, I imagine less voltage, then better. Because the others get a little hot.

Hello colleagues, following the trail of the server world, etc. I realized that the watts of the power supply that each of the U servers I have is 250w. So far so good. Now comes where in the PC world they wouldn't have sold it to me, but here they have sold it to me and by a landslide. To begin with, these servers work looking for redundancy and security, not power. That is, if one fails, the other continues. Well, again. So the hp proliant dls360p gen 8 gen9, etc. come prepared for you to have two power supplies. If one fails, the other continues, that is, redundancy. But if they sell you a machine, even if it's second-hand, it has to work well. That is, without failures. The ones I have come with a single PSU of 250 w. Many servers of these, although they admit two CPUs, only have one, etc. The fact is that in the ones I have, only the two CPUs at full load consume 95-120 watts each. Let's imagine that they consume 120 watts with a voltage of 1.2. They are used and I don't think they consume the same as new ones. 120 by two are 240 watts. If the power supply is 250 watts what do we do with the memory, pci cards connected, sound, hard drives, vga, etc. Well, in the past, I returned a PC in a famous store of those that became fashionable for this issue. The power supply didn't give enough for the hardware that was mounted. How much does it cost to do things well? I think not much. Well, again, I don't think the server world differs much in this sense from the PC world. It's math. And I'm from the humanities. Anyway, I have ordered two 750 w power supplies, to cover my back, because if the demand for watts exceeds what the power supply supports or it works badly or in some cases, it doesn't even turn on. That being said, we continue to pay attention to your publications. Goodbye.
