operating system for amd athlon 64 3400

I have a computer with an AMD Athlon 64 3400 processor and I wanted to see what operating system I could put on it, and what I needed for each operating system

@danhdu It depends on the use you are going to give it. Until a couple of years ago I had an Athlon XP 2000+ with 1.5GB of RAM and Windows 7 and it went reasonably well for office tasks. When Windows 7 support ended, I retired it for security reasons since programs from the TGSS were being used that require Windows and Linux was not an option.

If it is not going to be connected to the Internet, Windows 7 should go well on that Athlon 64 although it is a platform from the Windows XP era. It already depends a lot on the software you are going to use and its requirements.

Now, if you want to use it connected to the Internet, the only really practical option is Linux since the maximum RAM you will be able to put in it (probably no more than 2GB) will be less than the minimum necessary to have something usable with Windows 10.

So that's what I said. If you need Windows, install Windows XP or Windows 7 but don't connect it to the Internet. If you don't need Windows, look for a Linux distro that fits you.

I agree with Mr. @cobito

@DanHDU As a former owner of an Athlon64 3000+ I can confirm that its natural environment is indeed Windows XP, where it moves like a fish in water.

If you're going to put Windows 7 on it, I would recommend Windows 7 Starter, as its limit is 2Gb of RAM, which is probably the limit of the motherboard you're using. It has fewer functions than the normal Windows 7, but it will run quite smoothly as it requires fewer resources.
