ONT Signal via PLC?
-
Hello!, I don't know if I asked this question a year or two ago, because it's not the first time it crosses my mind.
I have DIGI fiber NEBA 300 megabytes, with the ONT and a Cudy router (not the operator's) in the living room. I connect it to the NAS and the PC in another room using a PLC that doesn't reach Gigabit speeds, although it has two ports and acts as a switch, so I had to put a Gigabit switch to connect the PC and NAS and that the transfers between them were not affected.
I had thought about leaving the ONT in the living room, and passing the ethernet signal that goes from the ONT to the router, which would be in the computer room, through the PLC (having 300 megabytes I don't worry that it doesn't reach Gigabit). This would save me the switch and I would have the router next to the NAS and PC.
Is this possible or can there be some kind of incompatibility between that signal and the PLC?, perhaps some network protocol or who knows, I don't know.
Thanks!

As far as I know, the RJ45 of the ONT is standard ethernet with the standard TCP/IP stack (the latter I think would be irrelevant). The only thing that comes to mind that could cause problems is that the PLC ethernet is 100Mbps, but I would be very surprised if the ONT cannot negotiate different speeds than gigabit.
I have never tried it, so let's see if someone can confirm, but at first glance, I don't see a problem.

@cobito The PLC has Gigabit connections. I'll try it out.

Yes, it is possible to place the router in the computer room and connect the ONT to it through the PLC adapters, as PLC devices simply transmit Ethernet traffic and do not interfere with the network protocols used between the ONT and router. As long as your ISP does not require a direct physical connection for a specific setup, the router should establish the internet connection normally. However, keep in mind that the stability and speed of the connection will depend on the quality of your home's electrical wiring and the PLC adapters. Since your internet plan is 300 Mbps, using the PLC link between the ONT and router should generally work well, although a direct Ethernet cable would still provide the best reliability and performance.

Thanks! It's been a while since this thread, but honestly, I'm in the same situation as before because I left it aside and didn't test anything. Maybe I'll run some tests next week since I'll be tidying up the computer room soon.
