I have a colleague whose XP desktop suddenly crashed; according to him, it turned off suddenly and when he turned it on, he no longer had it. After cleaning it up and trying everything that is mentioned on Google, I have only managed to "resurrect" it by making a copy of the explorer.exe in C:\\Program Files\\ and renaming it (I called it "escritorio.exe"). Then I changed the value of the shell in the local machine\\…\\winNT..\\winlogon\\ registry to the new file.

If I run c:\\Program Files\\escritorio.exe, the desktop returns, but I can't get it to load at Windows startup. How can I fix this?? (putting a shortcut in the start menu doesn't work).

      Thanks.

System Restore was invented for this kind of thing, but I'm better off thinking about switching to an OS that has support <:(

        Windows XP D.E.P. :llorar:

c:\\Program Files\\desktop.exe? Neither that file name nor it being in that directory are normal. As far as I remember, the desktop starts with explorer.exe.

As Fassou told you, Windows XP is not a good option since it has no support and there is already at least one detected security flaw that has not been resolved. In any case, if you want to continue using Windows XP, I would give it a format because that "desktop.exe"… <:(

That was the most obvious one, yes, but there are no previous restore points.

Changing the OS is not an option for now.

Let's see if I read what I wrote more carefully, hehe, I created that name and that path myself. It's the only way to have the desktop working. You make a copy of explorer.exe, and put it in another folder, rename it, and change the explorer's shell registry to the new file. If you don't do this, you don't have a desktop, because if you run explorer.exe from c:\\windows (in fact, I've tried it from any folder) it simply does nothing, the process loads, but the desktop doesn't start.

It's clear that this computer needs to be formatted (and should move to more modern versions of Windows), in fact I've already told him that, to start making backups, but in the meantime, if anyone knows a way to make the shell run at Windows startup from a different path than the default one, they would be doing me a big favor.

            Salu2

You can try adding that "escritorio.exe" to the registry at HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run

Including it in the startup I had already tried, but it does not load, I will try the option you mention, to see how it goes, thanks.
