Thread about "indispensables" in Linux
-
Well, I wanted to open this thread, where those of us who use linux on our machines for daily use can comment on some utilities, applications, scripts etc for linux distributions that can bring us great things.
I will start by commenting on one that I have liked quite a bit.
It is Gnome DO
I found it while looking for a linux alternative to one of my favorite OSX programs, QuickSilver. I have been using it since I became a mac user (which, silly me, is already 6 years). And in my intention to leave the hackintosh world and look for something more optimized for my hardware, I decided to migrate the Desktop to Ubuntu, which required me to make the transition more enjoyable.
It is an application launcher, but also a file search engine, command executor, etc.It is also necessary to mention, although I suppose these are already more public domain, Transmission, Chrome and Spotify (which works perfectly for me on ubuntu).
Let's see what things we discover among all of us.

This thread doesn't deserve to be forgotten, although when you posted it I was still almost exclusively using Windows. The bad thing is that I don't have much to contribute or at least nothing revolutionary or out of the ordinary.
My essential is Gimp.
The truth is that I can't do anything related to graphics if Gimp isn't around, both for editing more or less complex things, like resizing photos or creating a simple logo for a website. Besides, in Linux it has always started veryyy fast, much more than in Windows, although it should be taken into account that I have always been a Gnome 2.x user and both share the GTK libraries.
Others that can't be missing are the classics Firefox, Thunderbird and LibreOffice. I also forgot Clementine as a music player.
As a curiosity, I should say that I also use all the mentioned programs on Windows.

A constant in my daily experience as a user is the ace trio formed by Shutter, Libreoffice, and Chromium. In the background, doing the backing vocals Transmission and the invaluable constancy behind the scenes of Dropbox. I always try to have Gparted close by, for the sake of keeping every bit of the hard drive under control, which are then formatted freely. The rest, I like to keep trying and researching new applications, so I don't get too attached to them, until they demonstrate a quality and utility (both terms are subjective).
Best regards

I used to use Transmission as well, but I tried Ktorrent which is much more configurable and I liked it better. It's also not heavy and doesn't use up many resources, so it's welcome.

For me these are: · Okular: PDF viewer · Kwrite: plain text editor · Amarok: play music · VLC: play both audio and video · K3B: yes, I still tinker with recordable CDs and DVDs very occasionally · Firefox · Thunderbird · Skype · KTorrent: I don't like it too much because when it's been on for a while the PC gets sluggish. I prefer transmission but since this is the one that comes by default in KDE and I use it very occasionally, it's the one I use. · aMule: essential for finding anything anywhere, even if it's a bit slow to download. · KRCD with rdesktop: remote desktop for Terminal Server. I will soon stop using it because of a change of platform on emule-pc. · Gkrellm: small monitor of CPU, memory, network, etc... usage · Ark with unrar: container manager. Although Fileroller is much better, but since I don't use it much either, I leave Ark which is the one that comes by default with KDE. · Adobe Flash Player: it only has support for security updates now but it's essential for viewing the media of the main audio and video portals. · KDEenlive: for making video montages. · Libreoffice · Virtualbox: I use it quite regularly especially to test versions of test distros. · Dropbox: cloud storage · Owncloud: my own dropbox with 500 gb for 8€/year in electricity bills. · Steam: although it's still in testing, I've used it quite a lot lately · Gwenview: photo viewer. · Arduino IDE: for programming ATMega328P microcontrollers This is the basics for all the PCs I have although I usually use more specific software. -
· Amarok: reproducir música
· K3B: sí, todavía trasteo con cds y dvd grabables muy de vez en cuandoThese are two that I will have to try when I return to KDE after a mountain of years (if I finally do it) although K3B is an old acquaintance, and yes, I still burn CDs/DVDs for some distro and for the car's music.
· Arduino IDE: for programming ATMega328P microcontrollers
I have this in mind, some friends are teasing me with the bug and I have something in mind that I will be putting here soon.

I add Everpad, which serves to synchronize with Evernote from linux. It is quite simple and easy to use.
In three commands you have it installed and working.
