[Cover] The loss of control over our hardware is intensifying

FOSS is a solution to regain that control, but it is not always a real possibility either due to availability (not all hardware has free drivers) or functionality (not all software runs on the operating system we would like).

@cobito Interesting, I had no idea about the Motherboard.
This is like everything, this function as described is good, but it's a double-edged sword for users that the manufacturer gets "used to" installing things on us without our consent like... I see a "I've installed avast so you're protected from minute 1" - MEEEEEEEEEEEC -
Good:
I read it the other day, and I think it's nonsense. Having software pre-installed in a memory so that it installs itself in a hidden way is an aberration. If someone comes up with the idea of putting malware in that part of the UEFI, we're going to have more than one problem. I would prefer that they gave me a pendrive with the driver on another side, and that it's up to me to install it. If that memory is accessible from an installation, no one tells you that malicious software can't be copied to the same place. Another thing is that it's a non-writable memory, which I doubt, because I think that along with the new BIOS, it will allow that driver to be updated.
Many may see it as a help to people who don't know anything about PCs, but the fact that a company has that control over the hardware, and now over the software, doesn't give me much confidence.
