Hi, I have a new tower with this motherboard that supports usb 3.1, Asus Prime A320M-A
      https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-A320M-A/

I want to buy a case and a drive to make copies (I discard the nas option), the idea is to make full copies on Mondays (saving 4 full copies) and then incremental from Tuesday to Sunday.

For this I have the doubt if I take a 2.5" case with an SSD or a 3.5" with an HDD.

I think the most coherent option would be a mechanical HDD since the writing speed is not a "priority" because I will make the copies at night while I am not using the pc.

That being said... the tower has usb 3.1 (I don't remember if front or back), but the idea is to connect a 3.1 box there are my doubts.

      • HDD or SSD (I think better HDD no?)
      • If it can be I would like it not to have external power with usb 3.1 is it possible? both 2.5 and 3.5?

Thanks and I hope for your suggestions ?

HDD and you will have to use external power anyway, because I don't think the USBs have enough power to move the disk. A USB gives approximately 500ma, maybe the new ones 1A, but some hds consume more. An SSD moves it without problems, but what one of 1TB tells you is what a HDD of 4Tb costs, and if it's for copies better more capacity than speed.
The usb are always at the back with the hdd. The front ones usually have power problems. Not all, but with 2.5 usb 3.0 hdd's sometimes the front ones don't catch them.

        Greetings

I do not recommend that idea of having an external drive for backups at all.

Besides, only 2.5 drives can be powered by USB without additional power; 3.5 drives must be powered by their corresponding adapter, making them as cumbersome as if they were using external SATA.

My suggestion, since you do not want to set up a NAS, look for a case that allows you to set up a RAID1, or perhaps a cloud service.
