Hello. I am considering building a NAS. I see that by building it myself, I would get more for less money. I would install Openmediavault and use it for file server, pihole, and multimedia. Although I see that many people with dockers get a lot of use out of it.

I had thought about the following characteristics:

-Integrated CPU with J5040 or similar CPU board (or another CPU if you recommend it). With 4 SATA ports and that supports DDR4 Ram. If it also has a PCIe to add an adapter and an M2 new disk, it will be great for installing the operating system. The integrated CPU is to be silent and because it doesn't get hot.

-ITX form factor case. Like a commercial NAS. If it has a small power supply, it would be a good thing. I have seen some cube-like ones, very elegant.

      Best regards

@tipitao In this thread I tested different systems: https://foro.hardlimit.com/topic/62391/dudas-sobre-nas?_=1680678313487

Perhaps it will be helpful to you. I actually built one with 4 bays for 3.5"

The motherboard you suggest will work, although if you find one with 4 SATA ports, you can save yourself the controller. Other than that, the CPU usage is relatively low except when you do an array check, rebuild, add a disk, and those kinds of operations that don't happen very often.

Regarding RAM, with OMV it will be used as it is used in Linux: as a buffer. If the NAS is going to be mounted on a single PC with plenty of RAM, you don't need much RAM. If you expect to access the same data over and over again, then it will be useful. In my case, I put 16GB but I don't think there would have been much difference with 8 or even 4 since multiple computers are connected to the NAS, each doing its own thing and each with its own buffer.
