SOS instalando paquetes

Pues vereis, intentando instalar GAIM 0.63 me pedia dependencias de GLIB y GTK. Una vez instalada GLIB 2.2.1 procedo con la GTK, esta me da error al hacer configure por faltar las librerias atk y pango, y cuando intento instalar estas dos ultimas me sale lo siguiente en el configure :

If it is not finding GLIB, you'll need yo set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, or edit /etc/ld.so.comf to point to the installed location. Also, make sure you have run ldconfig if that is required on your system

Veamos, donde modifico el LD_LIBRARY_PATH? y si tengo q modificar el ld.so.conf, porque cuando lo edito no puedo guardar los cambios ni aun siquiera estando logueado como root? AYUDAAAA :rabieta:
