Hello. I need a PC that will be used for office tasks on Linux but will need to run virtual machines for programs that only run on Windows. Initially, two VMs will be run on Virtualbox with Windows 7 and presumably a third with SCO Unix. That's why I need it to have an acceptable amount of RAM and probably 4 cores. I have thought about this:

Processor: i5-3570K (200€): because it has 4 cores and includes the HD4000. I don't need graphics power, but for a little more it's better to have that.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2H (60€): because it's the cheapest with 4 memory slots for future expansions. I don't know if the H61 Express will be up to the processor's level. I need it to have a VGA connector.

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1333 2x4GB CL9 (55€): the cheapest 8 Gb in dual channel. I don't know if the 1333 will be good for the micro.

Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB (60€): nothing to comment

      Case: Nox Nova (25€)

Power supply: Nox Urano SX 500W (30€)

      Total: 430€

      Budget: Less than 500€

Sorry that I haven't informed myself about the chipset and memory frequency, I was asked for it urgently and I'm informing myself about everything now.
      Thank you very much.

ARK | Intel® Core™ i5-3570K Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz) valer vale the memory.
The board does not support third-generation processors.

Don't skimp on the motherboard and as Kernel says, go for one with the B75 as that one is old, and how about waiting for the Haswells that have better graphics since you're going to use the integrated one? Between 1333 and 1600 there's very little difference in € and the Haswells come ready for 1600 by default to give the option to serve for a future expansion.

I have looked at the Gigabyte GA-B75-D3V which may be a good candidate. If I can't fix a problem by tomorrow, it will have to be Ivy Bridge. If I can get what's there to keep working for a few months, I will wait for Haswell.

Well, it wasn't possible to wait and I won't be able to sink my teeth into Haswell in the short term :nono:. The final order was this:

              Processor: i5 3570k: ARK | Intel® Core™ i5-3570K Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)
              Motherboard: Asus P8B75-V: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8B75V/
Memory: 2x 4gb 1333MHz (in the end I was stingy )
Hard drive: Western Digital 1Tb Caviar Black: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760
              Optical drives: DVD burner
Power supply: Nox Urano VX 650 with active PFC: http://www.nox-xtreme.com/en/product/urano-vx-650w/57/
Case: Talius Selene: Talius - Selene

              Price: 514 €

I hope the adventure of migrating to Linux is a success. If not, what a waste of everything for office tasks...

                  @G0D1N0:

It's a PC quite worse than the one I've put in everything except the processor which is the same and the memories which are a bit better: the case regulareja, the bad power supply, the motherboard too basic (and with only 2 memory slots: I want 4), and the hard drive of the heap.

I need the PC to have quality components since reliability is fundamental.

Anyway, from which store have you taken that budget? It has good prices.

man, I feel a little more secure with a 650W NOX with PFC, which is not the cream of the crop, than one that comes with a box for 28€…

@G0D1N0 The NOX is cheaper, more powerful and more efficient than that AeroCool; quality…, quality would be that instead of putting random things in images you explain why you prefer this over that with a couple of sentences, without excesses either, lest it be.

You are wrong in everything, it is just the opposite of what you say

The Aerocool practically delivers the 500 watts it promises while the Nox stays below the Aerocool (it barely exceeds 480 watts) and well below the 650 watts that its nomenclature suggests

Besides, the Aerocool is single rail

If I am right, the Nox does not even have the 80 Plus standard:

:ugly: Marketing for the gullible ->

Barely 6€ difference between them, I would have no doubt about which one to choose:

You confuse the power in 12V with the total power, that it is not certified does not mean that it does not have that efficiency, and 80+ bronze is 81-85%. On paper, the NOX is superior, although I have not read any reviews, if you know of any to be able to compare both it would be interesting.

My God, what a terrible day I had yesterday. In the end I bought the components that G0D1N0 recommended in his quality estimate at a local store. The computer is for the boss since I'm in charge of IT in an accounting advisory office. So this conversation happened:

Me: here's the computer you urgently ordered
Boss: umm, are you kidding me?
Me: no, is there a problem?
Boss: look, did I see you with a cheeky face or what?
                                          Me: No pe…
Boss: no buts or baloney! what kind of box is that with the transparent side?
                                          Me: He pensa…
Boss: don't think! look what happens when you think! what will customers think when they see all the cables on my computer? Besides, will you come to clean the dirt every month so it looks spotless?
                                          Me: Well, not that much…
Boss: no man or nothing! I leave the box there for 6 months and you can see more fluff than anything else. Would you hire someone's services if they were a slob?
                                          Me: Well…
Boss: well, let's see the invoice

He takes a look at the components and at that moment a vein starts to swell on his forehead that I had never seen before. It seems that yesterday he wasn't in a good mood and didn't buy good components.

Boss (with nervous laughter while reading the invoice): hahaha! haha! hahaha!
                                          Me: is there another problem?
Boss: look, kid… don't you understand about the term reliability?
Me: these components are completely reliable.
Boss: oh really? is this crappy hard drive the most reliable thing you found? didn't you ask me about this and I told you that they recommended the Western Black whatever?
Me: I'll show you right away that this one is more reliable than the Western Digital Black

So I was foresighted and printed the graphs that G0D1N0 put in this thread.

                                          Me: here's the proof

At that moment I see how two more veins start to swell, fatter than the previous one. I thought he was going to have a fit.

Boss (with nervous laughter while looking at the graphs): hahaha! haha!
Me: I told you, it's better and cheaper!
Boss: you're an idiot! since when is the reliability of a hard drive measured with performance graphs? what's going on? that the faster it is the more reliable it is? and where are the 5 years of warranty for this one?
                                          Me: well umm…
Boss: damn! even a subnormal monkey could have ordered something decent! and I won't even look at the rest. install it and leave it running because I need it for yesterday. on Monday we'll talk about this.

so nothing, just waiting for Monday.

by the way G0D1N0, I'm still interested in the name of the store where you made the first estimate. can you send me the link, please?
