Run away from the Caviar Black:

For example:

7200.14 if it's going to be the main one

Caviar Green very appropriate and highly recommended as storage to accompany an ssd

Western Digital desktop internal drive range Caviar Blue 2Tb I think doesn't even exist or has never existed...

Duopoly between Seagate and WD:

(Toshiba will be absorbed by one of the two big ones)

The Western Digital Caviar Black is a good option in terms of performance and reliability, although they may tell you that it is noisier, it is a matter of quirks. I have a green one and I assure you that it also ends up being noisy.
The advantage of the Caviar Black is a higher speed in reading and transferring data, although nothing like an SSD in those aspects.
A good combination would be a RAID with two Caviar Blue of 1Tb each, improved times and protected data, although you can also do it with two Barracudas, it may even turn out better.

In summary, if it is for the system, get a Caviar Black or a Barracuda, they are good bets. If it is for data storage, with a Caviar Green you will go miles (assuming you have a faster disk and a better one dedicated only to the operating system).

G0D1N0 that's not entirely true, the values it gives in benchmark depend on the specific model, the configuration of the equipment and mainly on the disk cache.

I have a WD Caviar Black and I am delighted with it, but it cost me I think about 90 € a little over two years ago on hard2mano new, to be unpacked. For that price I recommend it. If not, I prefer a Seagate, more for the price, or a WD Caviar Blue.

Do you want it as the main disk? What are you going to use it for? As they indicate the SSDs are of low capacity but high speed among other things, so if it is for a new PC, it may be a good option to opt for an SSD + conventional Hard Disk.

Personally I do not recommend a low consumption disk (green caviar) for a system disk, but they are very valid for storing data. I have 3 Green Caviar and a Caviar Black among others, and each one for its own, but as I indicate the Black Caviar seems to me of a high price.

Also if your motherboard supports it there are 3 TB ones around 120 €.

What I see with the WD Black is that they are very noisy, and "scratch" a lot. In the work PC I installed one of two 1TB (an i5 + 8GB)…and it makes me nervous how they sound, and I'm not one of those who complain about these things.
But anyway, I have installed several more in other computers and I have noticed an excess of noise and vibrations.
The Green are not as noisy in this regard, the blue ones are more in the middle, they have a good performance and they sound little.
As for reliability, I can say that the Black are the most reliable of WD that I have tried (waiting to see how the Red that we are installing in several computers turn out), The Blue ones fail quite a lot, even we considered not buying them anymore in my job….
The Green ones are generally good, but they give a lot of trouble when you put them in raid 1 or 0 in Intel controllers, but well….in the last 300 disks installed I think that only 4-5 have crashed, as I remember.

Personally, my two Green ones are working great, and I hope they last a few years(they are for backup), then I have of second paws 1 of 400GB that is already failing and two other Raptor of 74GB that have the same problem, that is to say...:ugly:

Barracuda are the ones I have had the most at home and personally they are the ones I like the most, although I don't know how the new 7200.14 will be, but if they go like the.12 ones they are worth it.

Well, after this rant that I have let out... I would choose a Black or a 7200.14 (for system or data that needs movement), or WD Green (for massive storage, backups).

I clearly prefer the Seagate 7200.14 for noise, temperature, and durability.

The WD black is a good option, but it's very noisy, and the Green ones are only for storage.
