HP Compaq 6720s Portable Startup Problem

Hello,

I have an HP Compaq 6720s laptop (Intel T7500, 2GB ram) that has a strange issue with booting up, I was wondering if anyone knows what the problem might be or how to fix it.

The thing is, when I turn on the PC (the PC is off, not in sleep mode), the HP logo comes up, even the Windows logo, but once the Windows logo disappears, the screen goes black and it doesn't do anything else. This happens with Windows 7, 8.1, and 10.
It has VGA output, I've connected it to a monitor but it doesn't send any video signal either.

The only solution I've found is to boot into safe mode (by pressing F8) and then restart, then it boots up fine, but the first time I boot up with the laptop turned off, it stays black. Any ideas what it could be?

I've updated the BIOS to the latest one on the HP website and it's still the same. I've looked in the BIOS itself but there are few options about booting, do you have any ideas what the problem might be?

By saying that you have tried those versions of Windows, I assume that you perform the installation, install the drivers and reboot several times during the process. When does it start to give problems?

In order of preference I would say: RAM failure > defective graphics card > problematic hard drive.

I see that your PC has an integrated Intel graphics card so I rule out failure with graphics chip/memory.

Run a memtest overnight and any tool that checks the physical surface of the disk.

Indeed, all the drivers are installed.
The problem starts when I turn off the PC and turn it back on, if I reboot it doesn't happen.

The graphics card, as you indicate, is integrated, an Intel one, so I don't think it's the problem, I'm going to test the memory and disk.

Can a boot error report be enabled in some way? that generates a log or something similar to see what the problem might be.

I'm currently using Windows 10.

Well, after checking the HDD, Memory… and seeing that everything is OK, I installed Ubuntu 15.04 and with this OS it works perfectly.

So it has to be a matter of drivers, right?

The chipset is Intel 965 express chipset and the integrated graphics is an intel gma x3100.

I have tried different drivers on Windows 7, 8 and 10 but it fails the same.

Repeating Cobito's question, when do the problems start? Because I assume it hasn't always happened.

You have installed 3 versions of Windows, did it happen to you in all three right after installation, when it should show the desktop for the first time, or when installing the nVidia drivers?

On the other hand, you mention that it doesn't happen under Linux, so a priori we rule out a hardware failure unless 3D acceleration is not activated in Ubuntu. If on the contrary the driver is activated, we directly rule out a component failure.

I could venture that, by performing a clean installation, with the OS that came with the computer and with a driver version closer to the date of purchase of the latter, the problem will not occur.
