Hi everyone! I have been following a thread started a while ago about an awesome mod that is super simple and gives new life to the LGA775 platform. The original thread has become cluttered and the original poster hasn't updated his posts so I figured I would put together all of the findings into one thread to help any one interested. If you are interested in this mod, this is the place to find all the information you need about it!

Overview

This mod is for LGA775 motherboards only! It allows the use of LGA771 Xeon CPU's that are very affordable and powerful in many LGA775 motherboards with a few small modifications to the motherboard and CPU.

How does it work?

We are using a small sticker to flip two pins on the bottom of the CPU, then rotating the CPU to the correct position on in a LGA775 motherboard. If you want a more in-depth explanation, check this thread out: Explanation

Why would I want to do this?

Many people simply do not have the money to dump their old rig and buy a new one. The LGA775 platform has began to show its age in recent games and programs with most consumer processors. LGA771 Xeon processors are very affordable and blow most consumer level LGA775 cpu's out of the water. For example, a Xeon X5460 can be had for around $40. For $40 you can get a quad core CPU with 12mb of cache that runs at 3.16GHz stock. You also must remember that these CPU's were meant for servers, which means they are binned higher than the consumer level or even the extreme edition LGA775 CPU's. This usually equates to better overclocks and lower operating temperatures.

Compatibility

The following boards/chipsets have been proven compatible:

Choosing the right motherboard for this mod is extremely important. Some boards need a simple microcode update while others will not post with the Xeon CPU's at all. I will attempt to create the most complete compatibility chart I can, but also take a look at post #3 and see if your board is listed.
If you are running a motherboard with the X38, X48, Q35, or Q45 chipset there is a high chance it may not be compatible with this mod!

The Mod

Before you modify your motherboard, update your bios to the latest version if you haven't already.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage you may do to your motherboard or CPU while performing this mod!

First gather the necessary tools and components:

A sharp knife: Xacto, box cutter, or anything similar
A LGA775 motherboard with a compatible Chipset
A LGA771 Xeon CPU
A "Pin Mod" Sticker Link 1
Optional:
A pair of tweezers
A well lit room or a lamp to light up your work space

Lets start with the motherboard. First located the two CPU guides in the CPU socket:

Now use your knife and cut them both off

Once you do that you are done with half the mod!

Now get your CPU and "Pin Mod" stickers, tweezers come in handy when applying the stickers

And stick the sticker on with the little triangle facing the triangle on the bottom of the CPU

Now make sure when placing the CPU into the socket you line up the triangle on the CPU and the triangle on the socket!

You did it! Now put your system back together and get to overclocking!

Pues eso, pues voy a poner 4 cosillas de lo que cuesta una maquina WorkStation Low Cost con 12 hilos :drinking:

1# .- El procesdor que vamo a usar es un Xeon X5660 2.8/3.20Ghz con 6/12 hilos (Como un i7 980/990 o 980x), sale por 108€ puesto en casa desde Alemania por eBay

2# Compatible a placticamente todas las placas chipset x58 Socket 1366

En este caso usare una micro Xeon x5660 2.8/3.13Ghz que me ha salido por 132e puesto en casa desde eBay, la placa es una de la mejores del mercado, una Gigabyte x58A.OC nueva sin estrenar que me salio por 60e, toda una ganga

Ah, no he probado con uncore/NB a x47, para SuperPi no bajo de x48 o x50 si lo tengo estabilizado

Lo comfieso, tiene cambiada la pasta del IHS, le puse

Ayer me cargue un 4690k pata negra quitandole el IHS, me cargue canales de comunicación, ya que lo estaba haciendo hablando por telefono en una linia erotica y nada de concentración :ugly:

El tema de voltages, voy al vuelo, siempre pongo algo más, ya que voy saltando parametros desde software, pero aquí te dejo algo de muestra

Subiendo el voltaje de la RAM puedes joder el controlador de memorias

LLC debe haber pero, no sé como se llamará en las Gigabyte. En la BIOS actual con la placa revisada no me funciona con voltaje manual pero en la B2 me funcionaba incluso en manual y pasaba de tener Vdroop a tener más voltaje bajo carga. De hecho tenía los voltajes que la gente consigue por voltaje dinámico pero aún así con la B3 y una BIOS posterior necesito menos voltaje. Por cierto me refería a diferencia en reposo-carga, no con BIOS.

**Con ese comentario que he dicho antes, me refereia que vas a joder antes la controladora por acceso de VTT/VCCIO/iO que por sobrevoltaje de vdimm, esto no lo digo por decirlo, sino que es un echo.

En la nuevas bios, veras que hay niveles para calibrar el vdroop en carga, intenta escoger el que más te convenga.

Despues de estar 3añitos fuera de todo y de Asus, ahora cuando termine las vacaciones, volvere como pro-user de Gigabyte, quien lo tendría que decir que volveria despues de tanto tiempo xD**

Krampak las memorias nunca han sido muy importantes y en los Sandy se notan muy poco. No ta rayes que ya tenemos una edad como para picarse con bencheos :risitas:

**Pues te diría todo lo contrario, en los Sandy hay es más determinante, sobretodo por culpa del chipset, cuesta más clock por clock hacer timmings agresivos, aparte que nunca se debe pasar de 1.1v (VTT Gigabyte / VCCIO Asus / CPU I/O MSI), no importa que tengas las memorias a 1.72v, pero no pases de 1.1 de VTT, tendra muerte subita xDD

Los 5Ghz por norma general a 1.41v reales, intenta ver que hace con solo dos cores, para tener referencia de lo malp que es el micro

**Ostia, ya no me acuerdo si es el micro qeu use bajo RL o con la LS, en todo caso pon bajo "Phase" La limitación fisica es la misma bajo RL como LS

Bueno. Acabo de registrarme después de haber estado mirando algunos posts sobre overclock. La verdad es que se me da bastante mal porque se me ha petado el pc 34853974593 veces XD menos mal que estas GB se "resetean" solas.

En fin, ya que estaba he hecho un superpi de mi equipo.

**No tiene fé, eso es un BUG, me pasa lo mismo con la MSI en muchas ocaciones, en cambio la M4E marca el real xD

Lo mejor soy muy radical, pero para mí opinión es perder el tiempo usar un G27 para un arcade como: NFS, Grid, DIRT, GT5, F1-2010, etc… Son juegos arcade optimizados para usarlo bajo teclado/PAD con fisicas arcades, no usan un RealFeel acorde con el ForceFeedback de un G27

Para disfrutar de verdad, vas a tener que probar simuladores bastante más decentes, como: iRacing, Netkar Pro, LFS, RBR, o algunos de los grandes mods para rfactor (HistoricsX, PCC, BMW2002Ti, Enduracer, etc...)

Tengo dos, uno no pasa de 5330 y el otro aun hace los 5710, aun he tenido suerte
Por cierto, no he podido aguantar, dejar el hard no es facil, es como las drogas
