A few days ago, while talking to a family member, who for work reasons had to buy a tablet (an Ipad 2 in this case but it doesn't matter) and he told me that really, if it weren't for work he wouldn't use it at all in his daily life or he would opt for a netbook that is cheaper and with more capacity/performance.
The topic surprises me because it is the second case I have heard in my environment of people who, once past the novelty of the gadget, have relegated it to a drawer or take it out very rarely. They are people who, because of their profession, are at the forefront of technology and software but believe that, for what they do with the tablet, they can do with their mobile phone (Iphone or Android) without carrying the tablet or if they are at home with the PC or laptop/netbook for less money and more performance.
In cases like these, and knowing for a fact that there are people who give it a lot of use (otherwise there would be no sense in the sales success they have) I wonder, does it really cover a need or is it more of a whim resulting from marketing?

I leave the topic there, what do you think?

      Best regards.

I have 3 PCs: the desktop, which I use for everything in general, a laptop that I no longer use and a netbook that I use for travel (to browse and check email).

I have thought many times about buying one of those tablets from the Chinese that sell them for 70€ to try to see if it is really useful. Visualizing the moment, I know that in the end I would use it to look things up: check email, look at news on the internet. That is, for the same thing as the netbook but without the intention of contributing content (just consulting). If I am going to spend 70€, I would consider it a whim to show off a little and to use it for trivial things.

In my case I would never spend the more than 300€ that good tablets cost, simply because I do not need it: the netbook covers all the needs that the tablet would cover and it is only a little thicker in size.

I do not know if it will be a passing fad, but I think it does not cover any need that is already covered by netbooks and/or smartphones.

Not long ago, in an interview with Linus Torvald talking about why Linux had failed on the desktop I think he said something key: Linux has failed on the desktop, but it seems that the trend is that the desktop PC is used less and less to the detriment of other options and that is an opportunity for Linux. In the same way, I think that tablets will not be a passing fad if other gadgets that monopolize their functionalities disappear, that is, if netbooks or smartphones are passing fads.

In summary, I do not think that the market will indefinitely demand these three new devices: one will end up disappearing or a fourth will appear that has all the advantages of two of them.

I didn't want a tablet, I saw the iPad as a big iPod, but after a Christmas gift, I've had one for almost a year. I use it every day, both at work, for stock management - access to the management program, and when I get home for web browsing, facebook, listening to the radio... After using it, I do see its usefulness, always as a second or third computer, but if you can afford it, it's a product that works.

personally I don't use them, but my brother has an iPad2 and says he prefers it to a laptop

Watch out…that mentality is what makes Apple gain followers.
I bought a Chinese tablet for 100 Euros and I did not like how it threw (normal, you have bought a piece of crap) Android. I buy an Ipad with iOS5 and it flies. Of course!
My gadget costs 500 leuros (with keyboard) and Android 3.2 flies (and more now with OC @1.5GHz) I assure you that I can compete with an Ipad 2 and own my brother-in-law. :chuckles:

If its job is going to be to read email, look up news, etc…you will never turn on the laptop again. It does not make noise, does not vibrate, the size, the weight, the comfort...there is no comparison.
As a counterpoint, in my case I use it less than I thought I would use it, since my love for the desktop goes beyond simple uses of little importance.
If you do not have Wifi, but do have a network (at work, for example) it is also not worth much since it is focused on a continuous connection and without it it has no value.

After that, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S2 and now...I think I should not have bought the tablet.(I could argue a good deal, take advantage)

Summary: Yes, it is a whim. More useful or less…it depends on your circumstances. The usefulness is just an excuse to feel better after giving yourself the treat.
Digital Diogenes syndrome, SSD disks, a shout of Ram, high performance graphics...what is a necessity and what a whim? ?

Well, what Ferelxyx says is true, a poll has been created.

I assure you that, apart from the desktop, for me performance is the least important thing. I just want it to work (well, and to have reasonable response times). Besides, once I tried the Chinese one I would be aware that paying quadruple or quintuple is not just about having an apple drawn on the device.

Look, I have a netbook that cost me 170€ new. It doesn't perform much, but I always have it "suspended" so if I want to check something quickly, in less than 5 seconds it's ready. As for weight, I doubt it differs much from a tablet (and even if a tablet weighed much less, it wouldn't be important because we're talking about negligible weights). On these scales, this parameter doesn't seem significant to me.

The only advantages I see in the tablet compared to the netbook are two things: 1st as you rightly said, the noise (sometimes I put it on at night to listen to German radios and the fan is annoying). And 2nd that it's completely handled from the screen, without moving parts and can be handled in complete darkness. On the other hand, it's a device that can be used comfortably standing up, something a netbook doesn't allow, but that's something that doesn't affect me at the moment.

I'm almost certain that if I bought a tablet, it would end up replacing the netbook until I stopped using the latter completely. Then I would say that, indeed, a tablet is useful. But the outlay it involves (at least the good tablets), I don't think they are worthy of the advantages it brings compared to a netbook (for the use I'm going to give it).

But of course, I've never had one. In fact, I've never touched one and I'm probably wrong, but imagining the situation, this is my opinion
