My idea is to replace the server I have (now broken without a system disk)

Until now I had a "bare" xp with the download applications, the shared folders and the management by vnc or remote desktop

If there is an easy way to do it, I will think of it and "give" it to myself for Christmas

Mystique, I don't think you had any problem…

I had something like yours, a PC without monitor or keyboard or mouse, with a linux and running the download app, but the change is brutal. No more noises, no more big boxes.

You don't have to be a linux guru to set it up, although a "minimum" knowledge always helps of course.

Well it still hasn't arrived and it's been almost 2 months (it said it would be available in 6 weeks).

I don't mind waiting, but I'm going to be away from home for over two weeks at Christmas and I wouldn't like to receive it and have the package returned because I wasn't there to collect it, so I have two questions:

                      1. Does anyone know how much longer it could take?
                      2. How do you send it, by post?

P.S. I ordered it from RS.

Muahahaahaha!!! I have it working now!!

As soon as I opened it, I started tinkering with it and I thought I had already broken it :llorar:

How beautiful everything looks, so many options, so many possibilities. I think I'm going to cry.

By the way, don't connect an HDMI-VGA adapter directly as it can burn the raspi!! I will explain how to modify it to work safely.

In two months you will have an in-depth review :fumeta:

I'm bringing up the topic because I might get a Raspberry PI model B rev. 1 (the one with 256Mb) with case included at a good price. I don't mind about the memory because my intention is the typical one of torrent manager and a small web server without even MySQL and all without a graphical environment and controlled by SSH.

I already have SD cards and the problem is that the USB power adapters I have only go up to 650mA the most (less the one from the mobile, but I can't do without it) while for the gadget I've read that 700mA are needed and I don't know if then it will work for me. In the worst case, I'll buy a cheap one. For the first configurations I will use the HDMI cable from the WD TV Live Streaming and any USB keyboard. I also have a mini wifi adapter that Ubuntu and Mageia detect, but we'll see if Raspbian does it.

I've also been super tempted by it, because I download torrents everywhere and I'm not very eco-friendly with the i7 and gtx295 and I also don't want to have the air running all day long.

I also have an atom but it works when it wants…

But above all, I'm waiting for the new BOOK by Cobito about the raspberry PI to finally tempt me to buy one. :ugly:

My thing is that it's an obsession with low consumption. Of all my computers the one that consumes the most is around 31w at rest (I've removed the graphics because I don't use it lately), and the Raspberry will eat them all with potatoes, hehe.

I'm back online because if I edit you won't even notice ? I've already received the Raspberry Pi, but I won't be able to tinker with it until tomorrow because I don't have an HDMI cable here. My question is about the external hard drive and its power supply. I'd like to avoid a self-powered USB hub, so I was thinking of installing Raspbian first, setting up SSH and then configuring it over the network without the keyboard and connecting one of the external 2.5" USB drives I have using a Y-cable that already comes with the two USB ports of the little gadget. Do you think it will be able to supply enough current? I imagine it will also depend on the power supply I put on it, 1 amp or higher?
