[Query] Network card with remote management (iLO)
-
I am curious to know what the network cards are called that can remotely manage/administer a server. I mean, they work like the ones that HP usually mounts like the iLO type of Proliant, on other servers I have no idea what they are called. Can you buy a network card with those characteristics or is that not possible?
Greetings!!

Okay, but what the ILO managed was the card itself, regardless of the system, and regardless of a blackout if you give the network an independent SAI power supply.
No?, or to what extent could you manage/administer the server?I've become curious, and apart from the specific cards for SAI I haven't seen anything like that, but digging deeper only in the server and corporate world I think that must have been there, don't mess with it.
Well I saw something about a kit for ILO, but it looked like a loose chip and I don't know what about the included license...... and I got dizzy right away -
@defaultuser with ILO you manage everything, as if you had physical access to the machine. It has saved my ass a couple of times, it is very useful. You can start the server, enter the BIOS, configure the network, view the operating system (like vnc), etc. What for certain functions you need to license it, although if I remember correctly the free version gives you half a minute of uninterrupted access or something like that, which for certain things is already enough.
As for the question that @_Neptunno_ asks, I have no idea, I have never dedicated myself to looking for cards that offer the same thing but I have my doubts, if you find one you will let us know

@krampak That gives me the impression that it is already provided for in the server board, that is, getting video is fine, but operating in the firmware... I'm sure that the chip I've seen is a development kit and the chip has to go on the system board.
If the board to which you want to apply Neptune doesn't have something like that planned, I imagine that you won't be able to get that far.If it was interesting if you already created it.

Well I don't know, but it seems to me that if it exists it's not something that's easy to find. The only reference, although it's not the same, is network cards with WoL (Wake on LAN) to be able to access remotely and turn on a computer/pc.
Maybe @cobito or @jordiqui know if there is a network card with functionality like more of iLO from HP servers, although I imagine that Dell or Supermicro servers will have some similar function.

@_neptunno_ The truth is that I have no idea. On a personal level, I am more of a traditional solutions person like ssh. And professionally, I do not work in that field.

hello, regarding the ILO, I must say that they have to come from the same manufacturer as the motherboard and be designed for it. they connect to a special port for that purpose. I went crazy in my day to be able to transfer that system to my computer, but either I had to go through the box and get an HP server or forget it. in other brands it usually has the same name, but as with HP. it is essential that the motherboard is designed for it.
-
@krampak I have not accessed it remotely, but it is for what Krampak comments. And apart from HP, I imagine that Dell, etc. will have a similar system. The thing about the license is just like that, because when I bought it second-hand, they did not give it to me, I do not know if there is support, but for those who dedicate themselves professionally it is very useful. That is not my case.

I think I remember that in the less modern HP Proliant models it comes as a little card on the back with the credentials, in the modern ones it already comes on a sticker. However, I don't know how the software issue is going, but I imagine that it is usually always delivered functional and if they don't give you that license it is because it doesn't have it anymore or who knows. However, there will be many cases, of course, and with more types of servers.
I just thought it was interesting to know if there was any card scam that could implement all that already since remotely it is quite useful to be able to raise a fallen system or do a reinstallation of the system itself even.Greetings!!

@_neptunno_ I definitely think so, even for an individual who wants to have something online, these functionalities are a breeze, but for a professional, I don't even need to say it.
If you end up discovering something, please comment.
