Por curiosidad, ¿por qué el límite de Windows 7 de 64 bits son 192 gb?

Algo leí sobre limitaciones del procesador también pero lo mismo, npi, tampoco es que me importe demasiado. Menudo curioso estás hecho tú

Vaya qué curioso. He estado mirando y dice en wikipedia que es un límite artificual mucho más bajo que lo que uno espera de los 64 bits (=16 Exabytes, que salen de 2 elevado a 64).

En el caso de AMD el límite es 48 bits (2 elevado a 48 = 4 Petabytes), que es imposible meter todo eso en los chips de RAM que conocemos actualmente.

Most 64-bit microprocessors on the market today have an artificial limit on the amount of memory they can address, considerably lower than what might be expected from 64 bits. For example, the AMD64 architecture currently has a 52 bit limit on physical memory and only supports a 48-bit virtual address space.[1] This is 4 petabytes and 256 terabytes, respectively. A PC cannot contain 4 petabytes of memory (due to the size of current memory chips if nothing else) but AMD envisioned large servers, shared memory clusters, and other uses of physical address space that might approach this in the forseeable future, and the 52 bit physical address provides ample room for expansion while not incurring the cost of implementing 64-bit physical addresses. Similarly, the 48-bit virtual address space was designed to provide 64,000 times the 32 bit limit of 4 gigabytes, allowing ample room for expansion in the near future without incurring the overhead of translating full 64-bit addresses.

Parece ser que Microsoft, sólo establece los requerimientos de hardware tras probarlos, y por eso el Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64), establece como máximo soportado los 2TB, que es la instalada en el equipo que más memoria tiene en sus instalaciones (imagen inferior).

El Win 7 tendrá sólo 192GB, porque no tendrán una estación de trabajo con más :vayatela:

Del mismo enlace de Mark's blog: "The maximum 2TB limit of 64-bit Windows Server 2008 Datacenter doesn't come from any implementation or hardware limitation, but Microsoft will only support configurations they can test. As of the release of Windows Server 2008, the largest system available anywhere was 2TB and so Windows caps its use of physical memory there."
