I'm also not a fan of Windows 10 precisely because it updates itself.

The truth is that the big American tech companies are showing off with their statements on this matter. First Intel puts its marketing team to work to give a ridiculous and shameful explanation for the failure (nothing less than saying that it is actually a software failure) and now Microsoft is dodging the issue with AMD whose micros, by the way, do not have speculative memory prediction and are therefore free of guilt.

Without being a fan of AMD (or Intel or any) I have to say that they are treating the company shamefully in this matter: in Linux the patch is applied to their processors by default (I don't know if in the last hours it has changed) harming the performance in the appropriate tasks (it does affect virtualization). And now they are defenestrating an entire platform, because in the end the user sees that their PC doesn't work, not because they use Windows, but because they use AMD while the one next to them who uses Intel, does work.

Now it is rumored that AMD is losing $100 for every Vega 64 sold with a wholesale price of $500. The reasons would be the encapsulation costs and the HBM2 memory. The extra costs of the latter could be solved when Hynix starts up its plant in October.

It was seen that they are improved versions of the same hardware, I suppose that if you don't mind the extra consumption and heat... It is one more option to extend its life.

I'm updating again. After many calls to 22123, in which I ended up talking to seven different people, they are supposed to complete the portability of the main mobile phone tomorrow, without which I can't access HBO. That said, of the three free months of that channel, I've already eaten half of it without being able to access it; I'll cancel the TV in three months, first because I don't have a penny, and second because in my house, I don't watch TV (and the rest, who are subscribed to the gossip of "telahinco", don't need more). I've also managed to have my monthly payment adjusted to the 45€ that they offered me when I signed up for the line, and that they will refund me the overcharge in the next bill. We'll see. The most annoying thing is that today the same person called me again, (+98627***27) telling me that they were going to increase the Orange fee... and I let off steam, within reason, to finally inform him that "I don't care about the machinations of your company, but don't call this number again." According to the email, the service will be activated on Wednesday, the 5th between 2 AM and 4 AM... for my part, if they were to indicate a failure in the portability again, I would go directly to MasMóvil. Let's see if all this ends, one is not in the mood for hassle. :older_man_tone2: ** Update: Today I had to call Orange to find out why the landline line still appears in their company, when the calls I receive are only made through the Garrafón router (I have two phones, one on each router to confirm it) and it turns out that "even though they received the notification, they forgot to process the order". So, they agree to refund me the landline fee, about 18€; after which I had to process the cancellation on my own. That said, they put me on notice that they will come to collect the router (which I already have configured as an access point) and that if I don't agree they would charge me 50€, I think I heard. Anyway, as I have two Liveboxes (none of them is the 2, incidentally), they will take the oldest one (which was only b/g), and with luck not even that. I'm also looking for a use for the optical modem... I can't think of anything. For now, I consider this epic tale finished.

It sounds a lot like the iTouch I have: with each new firmware version, you had to wait for the corresponding JB.
Never mind, that's up to them. What intrigues me is knowing how much the Switch's hardware can be pushed, which isn't that great, but hey, with how versatile it is, they might even get some use out of it that the Japanese brand hasn't imagined.

Toshiba's NAND division within reach of Western Digital.

I believe that Western Digital does not have its own factories apart from the one it shares with Toshiba in Japan (thanks to the purchase of Sandisk), so perhaps the incentive for Western Digital to become part of Toshiba's shareholding is to guarantee preferential treatment from the world's largest supplier of flash memory.

@Rules Well, that would have to be thought out carefully. On the one hand, it is possible to comment on the configurations in the same thread since the idea is to link to a specific post. That is, if someone wants to comment on one of my machines, they can do so in that thread and no order will be lost, because if each forum member puts a link in their signature to their post, the information can still be accessed directly even if there are a million responses. On the other hand, this scheme can become chaotic if there are many comments, but honestly, I don't think that will happen in the short term.

About creating a thread per configuration, it may be good to have everything organized, but that ends up decentralizing the comments, prevents comments on several configurations at once, etc.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages.

I'll create a poll to see what the community thinks.

It has a very strange behavior. In my time of passing VHS to DVDs I could verify that when the video was noisy, the capture card (as hardware video compression) sometimes froze. When I managed to digitize that video, when playing it back either on the computer or on a DVD player (in DVD format not DivX or anything like that) sometimes it also froze. But the thing is that in those videos sometimes an exaggerated amount of artifacts appeared. In contrast in this case, the video looks perfect and besides the blocking does not occur instantly. It looks like it has a software solution and the truth is that it is a fault that is difficult to detect in the development phase.

I just saw the edition with the solution. Defective hardware can make you lose a lot of time. There have been many times when a problematic network or sound card have made me think that the RAM was damaged or that the graphics memory was more broken than fixed.

I don't know the technical details of the malware they have included in the mobiles but the problem goes beyond the operating system that is used. The Linux code is open but that doesn't give any guarantee that a Linux system can be free of malware. I'm not talking about it being able to be infected but about it being distributed infected.

A very cool manufacturer can sell its terminals and publish next to it the source code of all the software that comes standard so that anyone can audit it. The problem is that this software comes compiled on the phone and the compiled firmware could come from another source. Checking if a compiled program comes from a specific source code is not at all easy since the result depends on the hardware and software installed where the compilation is performed. Debian is working on this aspect.

I say this because the fact that now other operating systems appear that are supposedly more secure implies absolutely nothing. The only way to have a 100% reliable system is for us to download the source code of each program that we are going to install, audit it ourselves, compile it and then install it.

While the traffic of personal data continues to be such a profitable business, our privacy will depend only on the good faith (and diligence) of the manufacturers who foist their precompiled software on us.

And well, here comes into play once again the attitude of the consumers. The authentic reality is that the vast majority couldn't care less about this issue and that makes it very unlikely that anything will change.
