They work very well for many things, there are games where 4 physical threads are used, but when one is saturated you can find a bargain Skylake that pulls more than a little older quads even without HT. Not to mention that with multipliers above the quads and BIOS modified for non-K OC, quite cool frequencies are reached.

Men by LN2 have always gone higher, so it's normal that the records are still seen under LN2. With the vapochill (former owner of a couple of them) you could do little things but it's another league of LN2 or triple phase changes, even with dry ice you could sometimes reach something more.

Linux has two advantages that no other operating system has: it is multi-architecture and can run on any device, from smartwatches to supercomputing centers. Neither Windows nor MacOS are capable of that. Those two advantages, along with the popularization of the ARM architecture, invite the emergence of new gaming platforms whose hardware is relatively inexpensive. An example is Nvidia's Tegra platform, which, by the way, will be the one used by Nintendo's next console. It is not known if it will use Linux as an operating system, but after reading things like this the possibility arises that it might.

On the other hand, we have a heavyweight who has come to the conclusion that Linux could be interesting for gaming: Valve. They have not only ported their most representative titles to Linux but have also created the infrastructure to port graphics engines programmed for Windows to Linux. Or, in other words, they have found a way to translate DirectX engines to OpenGL. In fact, Source works on Linux in this way; at first it had a poor performance but in a short time it almost equaled Windows.

It was precisely Valve that encountered the problem of using Linux for gaming: the lack of a competent infrastructure. And the fact that this subject has been pending for so long has led to the abandonment of certain aspects of OpenGL. We have Valve developers complaining about OpenGL and others criticizing the shortcomings of the free API. In summary: DirectX is superior to OpenGL in games.

On the other hand, Valve has promoted a hardware platform: the Steam Machine. It is a console-PC that anyone can actually manufacture. But there are assemblers who give you the finished product with the advantage that you can choose the hardware according to your gaming needs. This would not be too relevant if it were not because one of the specifications of the console is that it carries SteamOS, a distro derived from Debian that is maintained directly by Valve itself including adjustments to make games run better.

Speaking of games, for the moment the only platform with weight continues to be Steam, which has more than 5000 titles for Linux (according to its store). The vast majority are independent developments that are not worth much, but more and more AAA titles are being found. In this aspect there is still a long way to go, but in very few years the leap has been spectacular and the good thing is that the trend continues to be very upward.

And to finish, we have the drivers. Currently, Linux has very good support for the three big ones: Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. Leaving Intel aside because it is not representative in either performance or market share in gamers, Nvidia continues to offer a first-party proprietary driver. In fact, its performance is comparable to that of Windows. For its part, AMD is immersed in a kind of restructuring: Initially it had poor support with a proprietary driver and the free alternative left much to be desired. While its proprietary driver continued to be bad, it began to publish documentation that facilitated the development of quite competent alternative free drivers. The latest news on this is that AMD has abandoned the development of its classic proprietary drivers for Linux and has created AMDGPU, which is divided into two drivers: one free that offers 2D functionality and another proprietary with the advanced functions of 3D, both maintained by the company. But thanks to the documentation, a free driver with 3D acceleration that promises has appeared.

As a bonus: Vulkan. It would solve all the problems found in OpenGL but is not yet widely spread. If it succeeds, it would end one of the most important obstacles when developing cross-platform games. Time will tell.

The bad thing about this new "weather balloon" for data collection by Nvidia, which includes all kinds of personal information including email addresses (Nvidia, do you really need my email to know if the driver has failed?) and which we are unfortunately getting used to because the main services (from operating systems, browsers, etc.) do them, is that all that information traveled unencrypted.
So happily, that any hacker could have intercepted that information and made a fortune at the expense of the Big Brother games of the unconscious of Nvidia.

I was also subjected to some nonsense that I wasn't used to, it was commented that I could help with SSD's. I wasn't interested in managing the 4 pieces of crap and it didn't make me gain performance.

In the end I always return to my minimalism, I skip ME and various crap to manage nonsense. I'm a fucking coward, I only change the essential: Win 10 for DX12 and as a bonus track the new driver for the glasses (they've marked it as enough by making them work well at 45 FPS) and the fast sync of the Pascal which has much less input lag than vsync.

Well, look where you are, I was thinking of doing something like this for HL. At least starting with CPU tests that would be sent to a database along with the hardware characteristics.

If this ends up in a rainy winter, it might just work out.

It's like the stupidity that Macs don't have viruses. It's not that there weren't security holes, it's just that it wasn't as profitable to develop a virus for macOS as it was for Windows because of the number of users. If a platform increases in number of users, it's normal that the number of malware developers interested in finding security flaws increases, it's the law of supply and demand.

Android and iOS have a very high number of users, with very juicy user information, it's normal that they try to crack it, and there's one thing that's clear, with enough time and interested people, a security flaw is always found.

I thought that two physical disks would appear. So I'm not very convinced by using an SSD as a cache. With such intensive use (constantly copying and deleting data) I imagine that its useful life won't be very long. And I also imagine that when the flash part fails, the whole disk will fail.

I don't know, maybe on a laptop something like this would fit but it has too many weaknesses and its price isn't very attractive from my point of view.

@kynes If I read something, it was similar to the Radeon ProSSG, but based on Vega 10.
Of course I suppose it will be for industrial use, in fact I think we will always wonder how the best game of the moment will run on one of those beasts.

@kynes Well, as far as I know, AMD's Platform Security Processor checks the firmware signature at each startup to see if it has been modified. The key is "burned" into the hardware so it can't be modified. So, if there is a modification to the firmware that controls the PSP through the ARM micro, the system will be in a permanent reset state, making it unusable.

So a security flaw there has no solution either.

There are some entries on the front page about these systems:
      · AMD's security problems
      · Intel Management Engine, the well-known "backdoor" of Intel
      · Unfixable security problems in the x86 platform
      · Intel's x86 platform, considered harmful by a security expert

And here, one of the people responsible for bringing these issues to light.

@cobito said in Microsoft: "Yes, I understand you":

It wouldn't surprise me if those same companies collected conversations to "offer us the best deals".

      Do you doubt it?
The fact that the voice assistant is activated by a "keyword" only means that it is already listening and waiting for your orders. That it only responds when you say the keyword does not mean that it is not collecting previous conversations... although, of course, they will not tell you that happily.

The colors of the circles do not provide information about the latest posts. The main forums have the orange circle, the public subforums have the blue one and the VIP ones have the black one.

I will look into putting the subforum of the last message, but I make no promises. For now, an option is to see the recent topics where the icon of each subforum does appear.

It's something that happens all the time, you'll remember the scandal with the laptop batteries that caught fire about 5 or 6 years ago. If it happens in a couple of units it's not news but if there are dozens of units catching fire from a top-selling model from the first mobile phone manufacturer, and it costs €700, the scandal quickly jumps. This happens regularly with iPhone problems, they're not always important things, but in this case they talk about losses of more than 15,000 million.

Then I review and upload them.
But the issue isn't about erotic themed games, it can be done, but that's not the case; it's about those that came out with a certain theme and ended up being the outlet for everyone.
Indeed, certain parameters had to be met:
1, that there was a female character who, for one reason or another, aroused interest.
2, that the game engine allowed for modifications. Several got away with it, and others complicated the issue in later installments, may they rot.
3, a large community, the bigger the better. When the circumstance arises that there's someone who's bored and is also a show-off with programming skills, the result is epic. That's why the community matters so much.

There's no doubt that the important thing is that the result is also entertaining; at times, the original game wouldn't make sense without that extra touch... and I won't mention Oblivion.

Edit: I've even finished trying to figure out how to make the spoilers collapsible. One would have to add a help button with the codes for the clumsy, or just for me, damn it.

      Edit: Thanks champ. ?

I remember using that tool a lot in Windows 3.1 (for me, the discovery of ctrl+c, ctrl+v was one of the greatest of my life), especially when my parents bought the Multimedia VOX in 96 and the teachers still didn't say that "don't copy from Encarta or I'll catch you". Ays! Those were great times for the laziest.

Nowadays I use Klipper, the tool for this purpose in KDE and I find it quite useful since I have it configured to save the last 100 copies. So I can make consecutive copies of different things without having to keep copying continuously.

For a gaming rig, I wouldn't buy anything without VRM dissipation, I usually recommend B150M mATX boards, you can get them from 80 euros. The one that doesn't come with M.2 is the ASrock Pro4. With a MSI Bazooka Plus, you can already plug in under an Asus Xonar DGX and even a wi-fi controller (or lan if the integrated one breaks) which are small and would let the graphics card breathe. It only comes with 2 PCIe x1 but they come in the 3rd and 4th connector.

As usual, the B doesn't have a RAID controller. Then it's a matter of looking at the rear panel. The Bazooka Plus doesn't have 5.1 but it does come with USB 3.1 even type C and the MSI Mortar has digital audio output.

I suppose that M.2 prices will go down, a 950 Pro is great but in my opinion what's important is the access time, the sensible thing for the common people is to opt for SATA with a 250GB 750 that costs you less than half.

Then there's the memory limitation (2400+ need Z), 2400 or 2666 are noticeable with some games and don't skyrocket in price. Starting at 100 euros there are Z170 boards. The thing is that if you scrape together for a better graphics card, that's where it will be noticeable. I would even rather save up for a 6600 instead of a 6500, the 6400 is out of the question.

Editing: And then there's the one who wants to plug in 2 graphics cards, look for a Z for lanes and I think that someone who sets up 2 graphics cards is geeky and well-off enough (especially with Pascal since the 1060 doesn't allow SLI and 2 1070s aren't cheap) to bother with OC, which is more noticeable with 2 graphics cards.

We'll have to see the performance of the **GTX1050**, because the guys at **nVIDIA** tend to go overboard with cutting.

Here's the example on the **GTX1060**, which in the version with less memory (3GB), they've also removed other things, and you can really notice the drop <:(

On the one hand, there may be games that come out only for DX12 (W10), although for the moment I don't think that will happen.

On the other hand, there are small differences in the handling of user folders, which can screw up the issue of saving games, or even for the issue of online profile.

And on the other hand, surely you can find crappy games that put the W10 thing to seem more modern, although for real software requirements, they can run on Windows XP (DX9).

      Salu2!
