If it weren't because the ThermalTake Vulcano 11+ is no longer manufactured...

What I'm getting at is that "the wife of Caesar must not only be honorable, but also appear to be so"; and since they're splashing the cash, damn it, put up something flashy and as tacky as possible, with stickers of "Turbo", "Gaming", a RL of rigid and liquid phosphorescent tube... and LEDs, lots of LEDs.

It seems like they've sent me my K7 and they've put it there while on the screen a video loop of a supposed benchmark is playing... ?

Haha, that's exactly what I've been thinking ?

I hope they step it up because it's necessary, but for now I'm just so happy with Ryzen!!

@desvest If you changed the battery and it started, the BIOS would have been reset. Anyway, I'm glad they fixed it for you.

No, the Z370 is only compatible with Coffee Lake, it is not backward compatible with Skylake or Kaby Lake despite being the same socket. For those you would need a Z270.

Finally I was able to get my hands on the kingston. Today I installed windows and the design programs. Since I haven't touched the other ssd, I'm going to see what tests I can run on it, to see if there's any improvement. All on a ryzen 2700x. I wonder if I'll have time this week.
    But the question is:
What test can I run on these drives to see real performance?
    Regards

I think the biggest difference you'll notice would be when opening programs like photoshop or similar ones, which have to access a large number of different files of moderate to large size.

If you work with content creation programs like autocad, 3dmax or similar, when opening very large files, I can't think of many applications where you have to read or write gigabytes of data in a few seconds. Maybe a 7zip to generate an uncompressed file (to avoid micro limitations) from a large directory with a large number of different files.

Precisely because I read all those links back in the day (and some of them again) my ears perked up when I read that someone had ME disabled and I wanted to investigate the matter.

Certainly, as you rightly say, these are very marginalized projects, both in popularity and in resources, and the worst part is that bridging it is the only alternative in the absence of a third manufacturer in dispute (I think my grandchildren will see the ZhaoXin thing) that does not implement its control module in the processor.

Regarding whether people care, of course most users do not even know what ME/PSP consists of, or that it even exists; but it is also true that I do not know to what extent it is healthy to worry about something that you cannot avoid or correct.

@lukiuhh First of all, welcome to the forum.

Starting from the end, there are stores where they update the BIOS for free when you buy the board and others where this service is charged extra. It is also possible to do it yourself by requesting the boot package from AMD.

Regarding the motherboard, and needing to overclock the micro, I would not choose one with phases without dissipating like that. My suggestion is an Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming.

The memories, today 8 GB are getting very short; minimum 16 GB, and being for AMD, B-die chip much better, such as the G.Skill F4-3200C14D-16GVK or some Corsair Vengeance (CMR16GX4M2C3466C16).

Another very important detail (pending to know what graphics card you are going to install) is the power supply, almost always chosen by the watts instead of by the efficiency and quality.

For that configuration, minimum an FSP Hyper S 600W; recommended an EVGA 650W GQ 80+ Gold.

They are working on it in every way: performance, temperatures, platform longevity, and support. They are lending micros to update the BIOS with the G series, I don't know if they will do it with the new Ryzen, but there are updates for Ryzen+ that even support XFR, which works great with a 2700X, and you also get a cooler that works well.

Meanwhile, there are people unlocking/hacking Intel boards that demonstrate a RefritoPasePorCaja made in Intel.

@cobito said in Meltdown, performance before and after:

Extract from the link that @lforos has published:

    · With Windows 10 on new processors (PCs from 2016 with Skylake, Kabylake or more recent processors), the test benches show single-digit slowdowns but we don't expect most users to notice the change because those percentages are reflected in milliseconds.

    · With Windows 10 on older processors (PCs from 2015 or earlier such as Haswell), some test benches show a more significant slowdown and we expect some users to notice a decrease in performance.

    · With Windows 8 and Windows 7 on older processors (PCs from 2015 or earlier such as Haswell) we expect most users to notice a decrease in performance.

    · With Windows Server on any processors, especially in applications with intensive I/O use, a significant impact on performance is shown when mitigations are enabled to isolate untrusted code in a Windows Server instance. That's why you should be careful when evaluating the risk of untrusted code in each Windows Server instance and balance security and performance.

It seems that Windows Server behaves in a similar way to Linux. The advice to properly evaluate the performance/security balance is noteworthy; the penalty should be significant there. And since they don't specify the scope of the tests and considering that Windows 7/8/10 are intended for the general public (nothing about intensive use of virtual machines, databases, etc.), the issue doesn't look too good.

It's also curious that in micros produced since 2016, the impact is less and in that same explanation they say why:

To put it in context, in more modern processors such as Skylake and later, Intel has refined the instructions to disable branch speculation to be more specific in indirect branches reducing the performance penalty of the patch for Spectre.

I read that last summer the person in charge of practically all architectures since Conroe (the latest more than 10 years ago) left Intel without giving too many explanations. That is, this should have been known for quite some time.

And about Windows prior to 10, the explanation according to them is that these systems tend to perform more operations on the kernel.

Anyway, it seems that the problem is not over.

To me, this smells 100% like it's an "indirect" way of forcing everyone to use Windows 10, killing the performance of W7 and W8.

Personally, I only had W10 on my main computer, the other 2 that I have that are more occasional have win7 mainly because otherwise every time I turned them on they would spend more time updating than running.

Thanks cobito, yes I do have one but I have read that for formatting the old 720KB it is better to use an internal one, that is, it does not cause compatibility problems when using that formatted diskette on an Amstrad CPC6128 or Spectrum +3.

Hello, I have read your problem, the main thing is that it appears in the Bios, if it does not appear, it is because the disk is not physically well and the operating system will not detect it.. Have you tried any repair tool, disk detection from Samsung itself.. SHDIAG O SHUTIL.

    Look for them on Sofpedia..

@xevipiu I see that's the P5K Deluxe. Could the instability I'm experiencing be due to the southbridge then? Because apart from the DDR2 memory I use, I don't see any other difference.

  • Run 2 threads on a processor with HT

@cobito I don't know if they have changed or improved the HT behavior, but when it was introduced it worked as follows: there are parts of the pipeline that are inactive on a core when resolving a thread. So HT adds a second thread of work so that those inactive parts can be used processing operations from another thread. That way you have two threads of work processing on a single core that works more fully by not having those "gaps" anymore. If a processor with HT only works with the physical cores (with HT disabled) it will never give 100% of its potential.

    alt text

One of the main reasons why about 65% of your CPU's execution resources remain idle is due to the fact that the CPU can only execute one thread of instructions at a time. Think of a thread as a collection of instructions related to a single program, for example, running the spell checker in Word would send a thread of instructions to the CPU to start checking your document for spelling errors. It turns out that the instructions within a particular thread mostly use the same execution units over and over, leaving the remaining units idle. The idea behind Hyper-Threading is to send multiple threads to the CPU in the hopes that the idle execution units will be used by different threads. Intel claims that with HT enabled the utilization of the Pentium 4's execution units can jump to around 50%, which is not a bad improvement for such a small modification to the core.
    https://www.anandtech.com/show/1031/4

What you say makes some sense, it's possible that it's balancing the load between its capabilities in the way that seems most optimal to the system. If you want to do a test, just look at how long it takes to process that task with HT enabled, putting that task to run only on the physical cores (you can do this manually in the task manager), with HT disabled in BIOS... do tests and you'll realize if it's really more efficient to run 2 processes exclusively on the physical cores or it's better to run those 2 processes in 4 threads even if two are HT (I bet on the second scenario).

PD. I put a picture and a link to an article by Anand that explains it better than I can, also how OSes affect this and that HT, contrary to subtracting performance, usually adds it.

More than having bought it, Apple has helped save the company to ensure that its supplier stays alive, and to prevent memory costs from skyrocketing. As far as I understand, they do not have voting rights or shares, they have simply "paid in advance" for the purchase of several hundred million dollars of material.
